Was Halo considered impressive for 2001? The god rays through the pine trees in Halo 1 is still better looking than the same effect pulled off today. Itโ€™s ridiculous.

For anyone who isnโ€™t aware, load up Halo 1, go to level โ€œHaloโ€, and move Chief and the camera while looking at the sun through a tree. It was an insane attention to detail in 2001 and still looks amazing.

>Was Halo considered impressive for 2001?
Absolutely, it's practically the only reason the original Xbox sold at all. Halo became a huge IP as a result. Though most of its popularity didn't stem from how the graphics looked, but it was definitely up there as one of the better looking games for the time, hardware was just getting to the point where you could make 3D look good.

inb4 quakefag, by the way.

Just realized that the majority of modern /v/ users weren't even born when Halo CE came out.

Grim. I remember when I opened up my Xbox that year with a copy of Halo CE, my brother stabbed my hand with a pair of scissors, still have the scar.

On a technical level, what made Halo 1 so special?

The impressive thing about Halo was it made playing an FPS on a gamepad not feel like shit.

I was impressed by how it handled checkpoints freely instead of rigidly and the quick reloading when you died instead of previous games of the era where it was all manual and you'd have to load for 20+ seconds
Some of those old games returned you to the title screen on death too

The idea of an FPS game with drivable vehicles blew my mind at the time, and I took what I could get back then. Operation Flashpoint, Battlefield 1942, Halo CE, it was exciting.
