>10 millions sales topped their expectations by a few millions
>They wish they could have reacted to feedback requests faster
>Anti-Gravity was cut from the Nitro Kart levels because it was harder to build and the main task was remastering CTR. It was also not a good mechanic in their opinion. They also wanted to avoid accusations of copying Mario Kart even though Nitro Kart had the mechanic before.
> A PC port was never planned or in development: needed a dedicated PC team, but that was working on Call of Duty's PC ports. No budget for a second team. Also worries about security and anti-cheating mechanisms that would be needed. Bigger audience is on consoles as well

the decompilation project is also still ongoing, though it will probably take a couple of years for a PC port since they've been at it for 5 years already.

I guess this is the best moment to start discussion about this, so here goes.

I go by Little Helper and have been working as part of a growing team (Custom Team Racing) on Crash Team Racing for the PS1 and it's decompilation efforts. We've got two websites up and running with one dedicated to tracks/cups/adventure mode alterations and another for mods/characters/compilation packs.

I personally don't have the mind for more technical stuff but got in to track development back in November/December of last year, stumbling in to a co-community and website lead role once I needed to pull myself from active development. The tools used to develop for this have been making leaps and bounds over the past few months whilst I've been recovering from personal burnout issues since January, so for anyone curious; now is as accessible a time as ever to join in on it's development than ever and it will only open up further as time goes on and efforts become more manageable for the average joe.

Been anxious to start a thread on the matter over the past few months and /v/ - while volitile - is still the best place to speak on this for it's reach. Youtube videos are too much a flash-in-the-pan for discussion and everywhere else is either too slow or too much of a bubble. I feel like shit co-opting an existing thread but I really do just want to see people bring their creations to life and have fun with the process.
If you have any questions about this; feel free to let me know.

FAQ
>Port when?
Not all functions from the original have been translated yet - and as more progress is made, some old, rewritten code is to be updated to stay in line with optimization and to allow for doors in future to be open should efforts come to it. It's foundational work and the wait will piss off people but it must be done.
>Then how does your stuff run?
It's around 75% new code running on top of 25% original code. Tests are being run on original hardware as well as through emulation.

I don't want a PC port for online, although that would be nice, I want it so that I don't have to bother with my PS4 just to play it again.
Decomp online isn't gonna cut it for me either, partly because of lag, and mainly because the type of person that's gonna bother doing that is so far above my skill level that it's not even worth showing up

You'd probably get more attention and have a higher chance of finding helpers the next time the decomp or ctr online has a major update
Crash community on this site is pretty fractured and mostly dead because of IAT ruining everything so most Crashfags don't bother to check a Crash thread unless the OP is something new and interesting
Not trying to kick you down for your efforts, sorry if it sounded that way. Your project sounds interesting and I'd help if I could commit time to it

These look pretty cool, does Boneyard Run have an offroad section with tar that slows you down kinda like the Crash 3 level? Could make some interesting shortcuts with that like how Roo's has the shroom SC, or Tiger Temple with the hills at the start, or Mystery Caves with the starting SC

At the moment we can only work with textures on tracks. Custom character models are still using vertex editing/painting for the time being, which is what makes them still look a bit off. Things'll come with time.

Have some wall-riding.

Aw darn, I'm sure that when the tools get more developed that'll essentially be pandora's box opened with the amount of freedom track makers can have
iirc isn't there also a polygon cap too?
>Have some wall-riding.
Oh fuck I didn't know that mechanic was actually playable now, I remember seeing a WIP vid of that months ago before ctronline got first released
That looks sick, I love how wall riding just feels like such a natural extension of CTR's physics and it's implemented so faithfully with how organic it happens

With the physics of that getting ironed out a bit, you could make some crazy Hot Wheels-tier tracks that'd make Sewer Speedway look like a baby track
Would probably cause some nutty SGs too

It's mostly applying the 'ground' property trait to quadblocks with the 'wall' property but some new code has been worked to allow you to go upside-down without the game trying to reset or break you.

In other news; porting of tracks from other similar games is relatively easy.
All Lego Racer tracks have been successfully ported, several from Speed Freaks and some original creations based off of other IPs have been coming about too.

This pretty much confirmed what I already assumed when Activision sent Beenox to the COD mines
All the talent that cared about working on Crash at VV and Beenox left both studios after Activision pulled a retard move. No real reason for me to care about any new Crash games if they do happen from Microsoft (doubtful considering the Rare IPs)

It's almost impressive how terrible Activision's optics are. Like obviously they must have had some faith in the IP to bother buying it back, but for some reason, they just can't ever keep shit on the straight and narrow. For some reason they just HAVE to fuck things up, even though it would be so easy to just NOT fuck things up.

I donโ€™t see why they canโ€™t just rerelease a โ€œdefinitive editionโ€ or something like that will all the content unlocked and some optimization for better load times and performance for modern systems/PC. Reworked online modes too. I know they banished most of Beenox to the Cod Mines but surely this wouldnโ€™t take a very large team to accomplish. Theyโ€™d probably even get a decent amount of double dippers. Sell it for ~$30 and theyโ€™d probably sell another few million copies off an existing title.

I've tried similar initiatives for different stuff over the years, such as with CYOAs but I'm definitely not great at stuff and find engagement challenging as I don't wanna force things on people but I do want to see more people get involved without things crashing and burning.
Here's what's possible right now;
>race tracks (including.animated textures, custom music, textures, geometry
>game modes
>character models (including custom voice packaging)
Here's what's not possible at this moment in time but is expected eventually;
>model rigging/animation
>character texturing (currently limited to vertex editing)
Could be forgetting stuff here and there, but that's the gist of things.

Several, but two that Palworld had to actively backtrack on was "using a ball to summon a creature" and "using a creature to glide through the air." Both of these features got stripped out of Palworld, and we know of several more Nintendo is pushing for.

Stuff should be updated in future once tools are expanded upon and progress is made on the decomp end.

Not directly, no. I'm more just someone who stumbled in to the space last November, worked on some tracks, got burned out but wanted to help things grow, so now I wear some hats working as a community and website lead - not really doing much, honestly and not feeling deserving of any of it. I just want people to be happy and have avenues to make their dream tracks, bring new characters to life and have a fun vidya space to explore things with. As chaotic and vitriolic as things are on this site, I still see immeasurable value here that I couldn't find anywhere else and I want to give people the chance to find their outlet in something like this.
This is just my personal views on things.

TLDR Continue working on your project while waiting for a big update from ctronline or decomp and post about your project in natural /v/ threads or a /vm/ thread if one gets made
You can't force interest to happen because the state of Crash right now is so horribly bad after IAT so big fan projects are the only thing that can pump some life in

I don't think there's much you can do with the state of Crash fans on the site right now

Majority of Crash threads nowadays, no matter the OP, turns into IAT spam/cope/seethe and anons lamenting Crash being dead (again) so it's all pretty doomer-tier
NF threads are really just nostalgia threads for how comfy /v/ was back in that period
CTRfags are waiting around for that decomp to finally be done or for ctronline to be in a good state

If you try making too many threads, you'll be forcing it too hard and instead of helpers, you'll attract the usual spergs that will derail your thread and talk about a bunch of other random shit (and they never do this in all the twitter, eceleb, AAA etc threads)

You can try making ctronline /v/ lobby threads and talk about your project there but those threads will likely die right now as most anons interested in that are waiting for ctronline to get a major update. And if that gets a lot of steam, threads will move to /vm/ which is also a good space to talk about your project

So really your best bet is that one or a major update happens with the decomp that causes more attention.
Crash threads are in a big doomer period right now compared to the NST - NF era

It's not really a project of my own as the team I'm with actually include the decomp team - it's sorta intermingled but efforts are still focused on their respective parts - so one side isn't slowing down the other. The part I'm in is very much open and is focused on custom content, experimentation and aiding in testing the efforts and discoveries the decomp team make.

As others have said right now the fandom is in a sorry state. The enthusiasm is there but like it works both ways. The people making the media have to treat the people who supported them with an ounce of faith or respect and Activision has been completely inept at that. Sure we could be worse off like Star Wars fans, Trekkies or other gaming mascot platformers like Banjo, Rayman or Spyro but then that just highlights the issue that binds us altogether. We need something good to collectively enjoy and look forward to.

Because Crash is dead. The news that Fagtivision didn't bother with a PC port is just more dirt on the grave. And while I applaud the efforts of the decompillers, unless this turns into a Sonic Mania situation, the franchise will still be dead.

ngl, a bulk of it's the reach of the brand, the growth of online deviancy and the perpetuation of OCs.
Crash is goofy saturday morning cartoon from the 90s where every episode can be watched without worry of missing out.
Sonic is 'freedom-fighting animal friends' that does more with it's cast of characters and setting than Crash would, which pulls people in more.
I like both but have generally fallen out of love with vidya games. As an enjoyer of Halo and Command 'n' Conquer; I've been effectively washed through it all.

You mean trying to get fans hired by Microsoft to get an official new CTR made? That's an awful fucking idea
Microsoft is not SEGA, don't even touch that shit with a ten foot pole

The best and always correct solution with fan projects is
>Make the project
>Release the full entire source code without hiding anything so people can make their own forks, mods, overhauls etc to allow for the best possible growth of a community
>Watch the flower bed grow and avoid self imploding by working with the wrong people (we all know who)

From my own view, releasing everything in full once done is ideal - getting people involved in the creative process sooner just helps in the long-term.
EA can release the code for a vast majority of the CNC series but there's seemingly one guy working with any of it and it's Generals: Zero Hour. So even if things were to be done officially; I'm still doubtful sitting on things will be for the better.

Sonic's bigger because of the extreme cultural impact he's had
In the 90s, most of Sonic's problems were caused by SEGA's mismanagement, then when SEGA dropped out of consoles, Sonic was still in good standing (people wanted a Saturn Sonic) with the adventure games
Sonic only started to actually go downhill with 06 which is pretty far into his life at that point (15yrs) and don't forget that Sonic had: TV shows/cartoons, comics, an anime, being an actual mascot for a big company etc

Crash meanwhile had 4 great games on PS1 but Universal are retarded just like SEGA are, Sony was retarded for not making him an official mascot (or at least showcasing him more as part of the PS brand), and Crash INSTANTLY started going downhill the moment old ND stopped making the games
It doesn't matter what Crash fans opinions are of the post ND games but it's obvious their quality was hampered heavily even when most of the faults is again mismanagement from the publishers
TWoC was rushed and would be seen as poorer quality compared to other 3D platformers of the time like Jak 1 (made worse during the time as 3D platformers struggled during the 00s which is why they all became more action focused and edgy)
Twins is Twins, basically Crash's 06 with how much of an unfinished game that is and it also started the more wackier humor of Crash's personality changing into drooling retard
Sierra era radically changed Crash's art design and personality which still affects Crash today and caused the 1st death because of how non-Crash it was

Remake era crash was just a repeat, we relived the glory days, but then Crash got given to devs that radically change things for no reason and then he dies again
All the momentum crash had in the 90s was wasted by awful mismanagement from publishers, bad dev cycles, lack of extra external media, and it unfortunately happened twice
Imagine if Sonic had Sonic Boom RIGHT after 06, that's what happened to Crash and would have fucked up Sonic bad

I'm not very technical-minded nor caught up on the barriers for such, so I've been left to assume it's going towards character rigging once functions have been worked through enough. Similar to how the very first custom track had to be manually made in code from scratch for a year later the second one to be made with modelling software and the use of new tools, I'd guess.

Nice on paper for sure but getting Microsoft involved just sounds like it'll suck. Only companies that I think are based enough for that are SEGA and Capcom but with Capcom I dunno if they'd even do that anymore nowadays
Personal thoughts aside, still good hearing there'll be the source code available, it's the only way to keep the community going strong by just opening the floodgates and letting people do whatever
That's also how community talent starts popping up

Ruins, Sewers and slippery climb looked way too clean in the remake. People shit on Spyro remakes but N Sane might be as bad.
I think N Sane being an exciting Crash return and probably due to it PS4 exclusive for a year made people give it a pass.

Honestly, both games are alright ways to play Crash and Spyro in the modern day; if you are willing to get a few mods to alter the models and sound effects to be more faithful to the originals.

The main issue with the remakes that I noticed was that Crash's physics are slightly different from the originals. Some jumps are either much easier or much harder in the remake depending on how it works with the games physics.

im 90% sure for the remake they reused their physics implementation for 1 and didn't tweak them for 2 or 3.
this is super noticeable for a bonus in 2 where they moved the wumpa fruit because once you reach the apex of a jump you fall like a rock compared to the original

The thing about patents is, the harder you push, the more courts will start to see that the entire concept is unreasonable. Also, you need to have some kind of plausible claim to ownership. Despite Nintendo surely thinking they own them, there's just too many racing games that didn't star Mario for them to try.

easy to play, hard to master alot of people myself included will point towards how drifting was implemented
drifting is super fun and rewarding to pull off, the boost you can get from a drift can stack into multiple drifts letting you build what the community calls reserves meaning you can maintain boost through an entire race if you are good enough to maintain it
theres more depth to drifting too but im keeping it high level
the skill gap between low and high level players is so big people get very salty and easily exposed as shitters
controls are solid, on the looser side when not drifting but you're gonna be drifting 99% of the time anyway so who cares
look up high level gameplay or a speedrun to get an idea

alot of the renders people do in blender are rips from what look like the switch version with low resolution textures and no fur shell shader so it looks like absolute ass.
redoing the diffuse texture was absolutely the right call in making these models look better. hair could've been retextured too, it's too detailed / noisy and could be more stylized imo

my pipe dream is having the models rendered closer to how stuff looks in mario kart world, none of that overly strong normals and noisy look nf went for
