Why did VR fail? Ever since the first Oculus Kickstarter in 2012 you had shills talking about how it's gonna take off any day now, the technology just needs to become a little cheaper, the refresh rate needs to get a little higher, the FOV needs to get a little bigger, etc etc
Well all those things already happened like 5 times over, and it seems like less people give a shit about it now than ever before. What happened?
Poorfags not being able to afford VR when it's already cheaper than a smartphone or potatofags still using a 1050.

>>714159398 (OP)Needs true killer apps. Convenience, comfort, and price need to be balanced. Some sense of real platform unity. Basically, you want it to work like how Xbox, Playstation, PC, and sometimes Switch can all play together. You want the titles to be uniquely pulling to a large enough audience even in spite of needing to be somewhat physically active to participate. Some social/networking features too.
Mitigating mass and improving fit/battery life are part of this. Lenses and eye tracking are important for overall performance (clarity of text/foveated rendering) and social purposes. Basically, when the world has access to an all-in-one device with a shape like a Bigscreen Beyond that has eye tracking, decent battery life, and the option to use controllers as you need, it'll feel more convenient and comfortable. Then it needs R&D to drop the price over time, apps that are worth buying in for, and incentives to move to the platform. VR is fighting against inconvenience and people tired from working all day; making everything seamless and manageable as possible makes it actually worth it.

Should have gave one of those billion to Valve and let them make a dozen games on par with Alyx. I mean that game is already nearly five years old, we should have a sequel and competitors by now but we don't and we probably won't in our lifetimes.

Because of Facebook's bullshit no company wants to cooperate with anyone or release their secret sauce to create unified standards and guidelines.
They didn't follow through on a Linux release, so we never got VR desktop environments due to a lack of actual headsets to use them with.
Their standalone headsets have massive cut corners, no Displayport inputs (only way to use them is with streaming) and their Android headsets are so locked down that "development mode" requires registration.

These are responsible for advancing the tech and making existing tech cheaper for not only Meta, but their competitors as well. Reality Labs is BY FAR the single biggest contributor to VR research and development - like I said, without their massive investment VR headsets would be thousands of dollars more expensive for the currently existing tech, or more realistically it would be thousands of dollars more expensive and also worse than what we have now

>>714160719Convenience is the biggest hurdle. You need to be using it in a wide open space with no obstacles. The battery is terrible so you need to charge it before each use. You also need to clean the lenses daily because they fog up easily. You need to calibrate the headset frequently as well. The experience is just too high maintenance for any fun it offers. >>714159398 (OP)I got Oculus 2, used it a bit and then it just ended gathering dust.
Things I realised:
-I usually play vidya to relax after work, having to put on the set, making space, and then moving while gaming goes against that.
-The games on vr are usually by themself worse than normal games, and the gimmick doesn't make up for it. Gameplay-wise, those I've tried seemed closer to mobile than desktop/console games in terms of gameplay complexity, and generally looked significantly worse.
-The set isn't very comfortable. I tried it both without glasses and with the spacer, and either way it didn't sit quite right and/or it didn't sit quite well.
I feel like maybe if the tech improves and more games get developed for it, it can have some potential in the future, but I'm not holding out hope.
I think it's more suited for porn than for vidya currently.

Because it has no games, duh. Make a library of killer games. I don't just mean decent stuff. I mean absolutely blow-your-mind cultural and artistic events that make the hardware absolutely necessary for the experience, and make audiences feel they HAVE to get in on it.
Until it has that (and not even an official Valve half-life game got to that stage) then VR will be a silly gimmick.

There is a reason the modding scene is thriving with general utility tools like UEVR, vorpx and reshade. While more custom engines like alien isolation or cyberpunk get their own dedicated vr mods. Anything first or third person is getting converted as you dont need the waggle sticks to enjoy vr. Seated play with traditional controls is the most optimal way for long play sessions
>>714159398 (OP)Because no one is actually making a usable VR system and because of this no one makes software for it.
Basically there is no reasonable entry level VR for the core demographic of it, if you want it to be about video games and are trying to appeal to gamers then you are expecting them to already have a system and just the VR system to be the display and not have and not be self contained, but all of the entry level priced ones are ones that run on their own hardware and not off your computer.
this means people who you would appeal to it for don't want them since they don't utilize what they already have and its only higher priced more "premium" ones that do.
They are clearly trying to build VR for people who don't own a computer or own anything and making it accessible to them, but why the fuck would any of these people buy a VR device? the devices made are just priced stupidly and created without an actual target market who would want these things.

>>714175818The Wiimotes were trash and disappointed anyone interested in motion controls. It's one area where VR succeeds in meeting expectations.
Otherwise I agree. The marketing material always shows people taking turns to use VR but that sucks in practice. Even the Kinect is better for IRL social gatherings. If you bring a VR headset out at a party or family gathering half of the people there won't try it because it messes up their hair/makeup, another portion won't want to make themselves look silly in front of everyone and half of the remaining people will experience motion sickness. That's a terrible first impression so it's never getting close to the fad level of the Wii.
>>714159398 (OP)>Start up headset>Virtual Desktop: check>Start up Steam VR>Laggy and unplayable since SteamVR is a piece of shit>Overnight go from being able to play VR to not bring able to use it at all.>Ergo, can't play anything on VR on PC.>Headset now a 750 dollar brick and these base stations are even more useless.Fuck it.

>>714161593>>714159398 (OP)yeah its this, it's Zucc's fault, Meta bought out and monopolized the entire market and Zucc steered it in the completely wrong direction. He pushed VR to be his shitty evil wet dream about having people under his constant surveillance and he tried to market it as a device for corporations to use to micro-manage their remote employees and tried to push it away from gaming as far as possible. The Meta-verse wasn't meant to compete with VRchat it was a sick dream of narcissistic sociopath Zucc having his own virtual world to rule over.
Meta holds a monopoly on mobile VR devices, every other headset requires already having a gaming PC which limits the scope of VR to enthusiasts only. The people putting VR games in malls and other public spaces have the right idea, thats a good way to get people hooked on the idea without having to buy the hardware themselves since its not something you can show people without them physically wearing the headset, but then if they go and buy a Meta Quest they get a platform that is full of absolute dogshit games and has a UI so horrible and ad-filled its unusable without downloading an external program called Sidequest.

>>714179237Also check that the fan vent above your headset in the middle is blowing (strong). My launch unit fans went out and I had to replace it. Caused similar issues (due to overheating) but not right away. Update problem is right away. If it's the fan it's liek a 40$ fix and a few hours to take it apart. >>714162990>>714162990>Convenience is the biggest hurdle. You need to be using it in a wide open space with no obstacles. The battery is terrible so you need to charge it before each use. You also need to clean the lenses daily because they fog up easily. You need to calibrate the headset frequently as well. The experience is just too high maintenance for any fun it offers. Itโs so much easier to throw on Netflix or a 2D video gameSpace, if you live in a closet like a third worlder, use a rug and turn off your guardian (the guardian is just annoying anyways) rug is how you sense your boundaries.
You need an external battery. You need it for comfort (counter balance) not just for power. If you always have a battery plugged and and an extra one to swap between, you're never out of power.
Are you from Eyed are something, are you receiving irl bukkake while in headset. Maybe don't be a dirty fuck and your lenses won't be dirty. I clean my 3 times a year max.
If they fog up, use an air conditioner, use a dehumidifier unless you're a third worlder in euroslavicstan. Seriously Americans solved this problem decades ago with the advent of HVAC.

A better question is, why the hell did people WANT it to fail. VR gaming is the inevtible future of the medium. It can either begin happening now, or fail and we wait 10 or 15 years. That shit wasn't even going to have proper locomotion originally (being a forced teleport only game, because "Oh no muh VR sickness"), and the level design screams this, before the dev team realised they were gonna be upstaged by Boneworks and decided to shove it in later in development.
No throwing the player around, nothing intense or fast, no fucking two handed weapons because oh no what if you only have one hand.

B, If Facebook hadn't fucked everything up, what we'd see right now is naturally forming market of "The latest and greatest headsets would be $1500, but as older headsets get older they get cycled into the used market, where prices would fall and be affordable for the masses that want to experience VR for what it actually is (Basically another version of what simming is, except with more of a tie to traditional PC gaming), not what Facebook twisted it to be (Mobile gaming bullshit, with absolutely every shitty monetisation practice and throwaway hardware problem that shit has)".
You can see echos of what this future would have been like if you look at ebay prices for OG Vives and Vive Pro's.
>But those headsets suck,Then don't be a poorfag. You want affordable, you have to deal with low end with yesterdays technology. Or at least, that's what it SHOULD have been if Facebook, again, hadn't fucked the entire fledgling VR industry up.
>>714159398 (OP)>Why did VR fail?It failed? It hasn't to me. I love how VR is now. You seem to correlate success with how much people talk about it, which is disingenuous in light of what the industry has achieved. It's like judging a game by how many Twitch viewers it has.
>ignoring the elephant in the room known as the Quest HMDsThe Quest 2 alone has performed leaps and bounds in terms of reach and affordability (with good specs relative to the price mind you), and you pretend as though VR isn't affordable? What kind of argument is this?
Now, many people who get a Quest don't play it much after the initial hype. That's true. Many people who get a Quest are also not VR gurus like you or I. You seem to also correlate success with incessant playing, when really it's fine to want to play it 'every once in a while' for someone who just wanted VR as a hobby.
When it comes to where it is compared to where it was in 2012, I absolutely disagree on VR being a failure. There are many good games now (into the radius, until you fall, boneworks, probably many more that came out these past 2 years), pancake lenses make the screendoor effect negligible, eye tracking is becoming more commonplace, FBTs are more affordable than ever, and more and more haptic feedback accessories come out every month. yes, you need glasses, the lenses make it feel like you are looks far away not like you are looking at a screen 3cm from your eyes

Worst thing about vr is how jerky it is to swipe things with it.
moving my head to read multiple pdf documents, sometimes the screen moves faster and sometimes slower, its finicky and not smooth at all. Also the 2 controllers keep moving in place a lot, the pointers vibrate, so its hard to highlight specific text. Even ball mouses on windows 3.1 from 1992 didnt have this problem. Unless they fix this, using vr for office use, which is where the real money is, will be too aggravating and frustrating.

>>714223817GTX-1060-6GB is VR ready for a Quest1, Quest2, and Qiest3S.(you'll probably not get full resolution with Quest3)
You can run both wireless VR and tethered VR, but it's too weak to run a Valve Index.
You'll need something like a RTX-2080 to run that thing.
GTX-1060-3GB is not really VR ready, you might be able to boot up Quest2 via Virtual Desktop, but you're likely to have stutters.
Basically, you need at least 4GB of VRAM run VR Oculus/StreamVR games properly, and 8GB to run "VR mods" smoothly.
>>714222474The exclusively parts is killing aspects of the whole medium, that is true. Since PC is generally where niche gaming thrives and it makes no sense to ever not include it on Steam or just for PC in general. So the Hitman game was a missed opportunity for sure.
But I'm still chalking it up to that very little actual talent exists in the industry that are capable of adapting to VR game development. The bar for game dev in general was lowered to a considerable degree over the past 7-8 years, even for triple A studios with bigger budgets. Therefore the games industry became more accessible to amateurs, then an amateur is tasked with a VR game and they always mess it up. We need the same kind of passionate people that were devoted to bringing 3D graphics to the mainstream like it was back in the 90s. Not the complacent people that are less willing to take risks. Btw some devs in the industry mock VR like /v/ does because they're just shit developers and know they could never muster up the talent to compete with Valve.

>>714182442>but the big companies can't do this? There's about 3-4 different rando kickstarter startup types who have sprung up over the last couple of years all promising VR gloves that work with SteamVR skeletal tracking and have various methods for ram-shackling sticks & buttons on (Or trying to make people believe that "Gestures are all you need! (It's shit, it's always shit.)").
They're ALL $500+, which would be one thing, if they didn't also require you to bring your own fucking tracking along as well, which is ANOTHER easily >$200 on top of that.

The only thing really holding me back these days from enjoying most VR games is locomotion. >Joystick is boring
>Real walking isn't possible for very far
>Redirected walking is only possible manually and thus dizzying and unimmersive
>"""treadmills""" (slippery dishes) are just emulated joysticks (boring) except you walk like a drunk old man fighting a wind storm

>>714229586Nobody is buying those bulky treadmill things, but even stationary VR requires more room than most people in the primary demographic for vidya have available. You have to be able to fully extend and swing your arms in any direction without bumping something.
You could probably move some stuff out of the way and make temporary space, but that will quickly lead to the headset collecting dust because it's not worth the hassle.

Doesn't help matters that many small indie studios working on VR titles - some even featuring impressive tech - were bought out or had key employee's sniped by big pre-existing AAA studios.
Said studios then canceled the projects after a few months of development, or other borderline illegal shenanigan's that modern corp's are allowed to perform.

The part i partially agree with the 'VR is dead' section of /v/ is that there should have been a VR explosion post the release of Half-Life Alyx, and yet there wasn't. The ideal circumstances finally came upon the medium and the rest of the industry dropped the ball. Then we have numerous poor excuses from game developers themselves about it all being unprofitable. Rather than caring about evolving the gaming medium. If we had the kind of game developers of today back in the 90s then we'd still be playing games in 2D and nothing would have progressed.
Alyx is just some overhyped Skyrim with bunch of unnecessary gimmiks.
Not worth buying a whole VR headset for, unless you're some casual retard that had to play all those stupid AAA "I feel like I'm in a movie" slop made for children.
