He's basically retread the exact same story beats with every major release and I've read some of his stuff that didn't and it was unbelievably awful. He accidentally made one compelling story once and videogame writing is such a small pool it gave him clout forever.

Maybe if his games were bad. I like them more aestheticly than for the actual story which is why I can call myself a fan of Automata with a straight face. The design of just about everything is really cool looking and the soundtrack is peak. The gameplay is about as good as it needs to be but not exceptional.

It's also stupid because it's using a purely modern view of both a hero and "guy who kills people". Ancient heroes killed loads of people because many people in their societies had. It wasn't considered some wild, out there prospect to meet a guy whose job had been to kill lots of people with a sword and who had received power and respect for it.

What is the definition of pretentious because I find it hard to see how he fits it. His games are crowd pleasers, he's an open coomer, they aren't difficult to understand and the major message in his last game was anti intellectual at heart.
