Wouldn't that mean they would have to deal with opposing forces on their own again? Without the military? Seems like a bad plan even if he really ''felt'' the guys protecting them would eventually enslave them or something.

Waylon is way more sympathetic if anything. He just wants to get the most out of his life in a post apocalyptic hellscape. Nothing wrong with self interest when rebuilding is damn near impossible anyway.
