Gaming doesn't pull in the good coders anymore, they can do better in law, banking, cryptoscamming, web ads, etc., almost anywhere. Publishers also burn out devs fast, then fire almost everybody once a game is complete. The good few programmers quit or were too busy being whipped for productivity to pass on their tricks. Most devs these days are horribly inexperienced but wanted so badly to 'work in games' they gave up a lot of standards doing so.
