Can someone explain to a non animal crossing player how do the npc socialization works?

Villagers have eight personality types split between both genders. Each one has its own set of dialogue with the only unique part being a nickname for the player or a catchphrase.
Special NPCs like Tom Nook and Isabelle have dedicated dialogue to their character.
