Why is it that Fzero was never nearly as successful as Mario Kart even though everyone on /v/ says that Mario Kart is too easy and doesn't require enough skill?

F-zero you need a LOT of skill, but the games were never as popular.

Mario Kart has mass appeal as a game you can easily get into and play with family and friends. Everyone plays Mario Kart. F-Zero, on the other hand, doesn't quite have the same appeal. It's tougher to get a handle on, yes, but it also lacks the easily recognizable characters. No Mario or Luigi, no Peach, no DK, just "that Captain Falcon guy from Smash Bros."
With mario Kart moving away from the anti-grav stuff in favor of grounded karting again and them bothering with putting F-Zero GX in the Gamecube Classics lineup from the start, there's a chance that they'll try to bring it back. Maybe. Probably not, I don't wanna get my hopes up.

It's funny how /a/ hates this anime but I really like it. Slice of Life needs to actually cater to the people watching it or otherwise it's just shit. This one is actually good.
