When I realized MGSV was an utter trainwreck because there was nobody to reign in Kojima's ego. Death Stranding is much the same, it subsists solely on it being released around a good time for games (the pandemic) and his deification for MGS3. A game he isn't 100% responsible for.

From a purely artistic standpoint I could no longer support the hackery of cramming complex narratives into games. Just not the medium for it. Sorry not sorry.
