I believe there should be ugly people in video games, when appropriate for the story, but they should be epically ugly, as striking and deliberate in their ugliness as the protagonists are in their beauty.
The person in the OP image is just plain though. Just weathered and dough-faced. No thought to their look beyond some nod to "realism." I honestly think it's worse than if they truly were ugly.

Basically this. The aliens in oddworld need to be ugly little weak gremlins because it fits the story, but everywhere else you should strive to make pretty/handsome characters
