on paper this is supposed to be the best MMX game, an epic ending to the series. instead it's hated by most people
what do YOU think of it?

Stage design is very hit or miss and often overly gimmicky. Forced dialogue constantly also gets very annoying.
The story is pretty cool but having the outcome partially dependent on RNG is weird. As is the fact that you can outright skip most of the game without much consequence (only downside is no Zero probably and no sub weapons or equips).
I also suspect production issues which is why all the cutscenes are stills despite some having animated versions in the opening movie.
Dynamo is pretty lame as a recurring baddie and just disappears after a bit.
Original PS1 localization using Guns N' Roses for the maverick names was SOVL, but also kinda stupid.

>I also suspect production issues which is why all the cutscenes are stills despite some having animated versions in the opening movie.
It's probably just a matter of developers getting less time and budget than X4.
To add to your bullet points, the way you acquire power ups is rather odd. X3 had its own quirks with pink capsules, gold armor and Z-saber, but those are nothing compared to the chips you can acquire in X5, or how you need to get full armor sets before you can use the said armor.

Like, on paper X5 is basically a new set of stages using X4's framework, but just winds up being worse. X6 is definitely by no means perfect, but I find it to be more fun to play once you get past the beginner unfriendly bumps.

Agreed on pretty much all counts. The game felt like it was trying to do something ambitious with the branching time-based system and the multiple endings, but the execution just wasnโ€™t there. The colony timer is pure jank and can screw you just because RNG said "nah." The armor system too-locking entire sets until you get all the parts is just dumb. At least with X4 you could start using parts of the armor and feel progression.

And yeah, Dynamo is like the most half-baked โ€œrivalโ€ character. Shows up, gets slapped, disappears. Doesnโ€™t even have a sick theme or anything. That GNโ€™R localization is straight peak PS1 era crack energy though, absolutely hilarious. Duff McWhalen 4 life.

It's very clearly rushed and flawed but I think that the hate is very overblown, especially when it's used as a scapegoat for X6 apologists.
Alia is annoying, and the stage design is kinda meh, but there's nothing that I'd say I absolutely hate about it. The RNG thing is a non-issue too, I don't know why people bitch about it so much

The main issue with X5's armor is that it starts you out with the full X4 armor (unless you screwed up and picked Zero for the prologue), so there really isn't any room for growth. And the Falcon armor from the first 4 stages feels more like a side-grade at best (flight ability controls weird, no charged sub weapons). And the Gaea Armor feels awful to use on the final stages, so it's basically just there for a few odd secrets in the normal stages. The "Ultimate" armor is literally just the X4 armor you start with and an OP special attack.

I love X5 and X6 a lot, and I'm thankful fans have gone out of their way to smooth out the edges of both games to make them even better, with proper translations and gameplay enhancements. Especially X6 having that improvement patch you can tweak exactly to your liking, so fucking good for doing weird ass replays like randomized parts drops. I just wish the original games were on the level of the fan improvement hacks so more people would be able to see the good hidden beyond the jank.

Easily my favorite X game. it's the movement. people remake and obsess over the snes games but I dont like the movement in those games at all. yes the level design can be a little cancer, but nothing feels better than x5 and x6 in terms of moving the characters around. its why x7 was so hated.

Itโ€™s rough. Really rough. Hate that they wrapped up the story this way. It doesnโ€™t feel satisfying or even final (including before X6 existed). The mavericks have about as many animation frames as a NES robot master lol.

That said itโ€™s a pre-X7 X game so itโ€™s still very enjoyable and has great music. Itโ€™s just a shame they did the franchise so dirty. It deserved far better.

Meanwhile I prefer the movement in the SNES games because it's more snappy. The PS1 adds some good SFX to sell the actions, but sticky wall jumps (you HAVE to get into the wall slide animation to wall jump) and slower dashes don't feel as good.
It's not like, unplayably different, but it is different nonetheless.

X5 is truly overhated. People think of the autoscrolling stages and Alia and suddenly think the entire game must be trash, when its mostly fine. The slower stages and mashing through Alias dialogue arent even such huge demerits if you even have a little more patience than the average twitchy action gamer. All the while the games story and music are arguably superior to X4. Complaints about the convoluted chip system are minor because they are not at all needed to beat the game and the game gives you the option of starting with the fourth armor to compensate for not being able to equip new parts right away, as mixing and matching parts would arguably break the difficulty curve (invincible Falcon Armor flight + Gaea Armor Charge Spam).

You can. X1 it can feel a bit more finnicky (you need to press dash slightly before wall jump), but in X2 and X3 you can do it just the way you do it in X4-6, just hold the dash button.

Same top speed (or close to it) but subtle changes to startup and end. To get around that you need to basically dash jump everywhere in X4-6.

It's amusing you have to deal with 'em in the first place. While Alia dialogue is pretty brief, yes, I think the bigger issue is with the cutscenes between levels, because those take annoyingly many inputs to mash through. Comparatively X4 and X6 have much less text to mash through, and you can skip most scenes with a single input.

I dont go insane when I have to mash through alias text for 3 seconds. I dont fly into a blind rage when the stage starts autoscrolling. Needing to collect a full set isnt really detrimental when you can start with the 4th armor or switch to Zero.

Its like if people called X1 dogshit for making all the stages too hard without the dash boots while the head upgrade is useless filler or saying that the level design sucks because theres too many straight corridors with only enemies in them or having two unwinnable bossfights that waste your time by making you facetank damage to progress the story.

Tell you what, I'll humor you, frequent pace breaking storytelling and slow autoscrolling stages don't hinder a fast paced platformer and dropping individual armor part functionality doesn't matter 5 games in.

Now you're still left with really bad stages and mavericks, a story no one can make heads or tails of, severe downgrades to the formula and quite frankly shit music besides late game stuff. AND an extremely disappointing climax to the X vs Zero subplot.

Story in games doesn't bother me, but it is an additional blemish on top of the level design. That said, there's a bit of comedy to be had with the volcano level, if you time Alia's call just right when that instakill lava flow is rushing in.

I agree, like its far from a perfect game, but people act like their nitpicks make it unplayable. Especially baffling when they turn around and praise/give a pass to the rushed shitshow that is X6.

Also the real trade-off for having to complete are to equip it is that there's two armors to collect, and its of course not really an intentional thing, but just a limitation of what they could do, since mixing and matching all those different parts of X's sprite would have been complicated to program, actually iirc I think each variation of X's armor was it's own sprite sheet, so yeah doing that with multiple armors just wouldn't be feasible. They were ambitious with the armor, and I still think its cool as hell to have two armors, but they wouldn't be able to pull it off perfectly until X8.

The X series focus isnt really speedrunning and clear times. The slower pace is a detriment but its not like it goes against the fundamental design philosophy and purpose of the games which is challenge more than it is speed. Dropping individual part functions was a compromise for having 2 armor sets because mixing the individual parts would break the difficulty curve (only X8 would do this later by carefully balancing the individual parts against each other).

Really bad stages and mavericks is kind of vague. I assume bad just refers to the speed issue that I already discussed. I think they are otherwise fine. Regarding complaints about Mavericks I can only think of Slash Grizzly being too easy. The others arent much worse than previous entries.
The story in X5 is fine. I dont know what you meant to imply with "cant make heads or tails of", its not very convoluted or complex. The X vs Zero story can resolve in two ways depending on the enigma cannon and space shuttle outcomes, with the result linked to the "bad" ending being more climactic than the alternative. Also the music rocks, especially the boss theme, but thats highly subjective.

I'm not entirely sure if some of the armor pieces, like the head pieces, "do" anything in X5 and X6. That's probably because they didn't have to consider what to do with each armor piece if they came as full sets upon completion, but I get what you mean.

While 8 and X4 sold good enough, it wasn't enough to justify the anime cutscenes again which were expensive and commissioned to XEBEC (RIP). Also X5 uses stills in the intro and the animation is basic stuff.
