>Earlier today, Krafton issued a press release announcing that Subnautica creators and Unknown Worlds co-founders Ted Gill, Charlie Cleveland, and Max McGuire have all been removed from the studio "effectively immediately". In their place, Striking Distance Studios CEO Steve Papoutsis (who has a major role in the development of The Callisto Protocol) has been appointed as Unknown Worlds CEO.

It's over Callishitso space 2 bros won.

As soon as they fired Simon for making attack helicopter jokes on twitter the company went to complete shit.

Not sure if this is a good sign or not. It's clear that the leadership for Subnautica didn't know what made the first game so liked, but will new leadership be able to make a good Subnautica sequel? Won't keep my hopes up.

It feels pretty earned once youre far enough in to prawn up and lasso those fuckers with the grappling hook and bore their brains out with a mining drill. I agree they needed to incentivize not killing them though. Like maybe tie a couple critical resources to them like the stalker teeth in order to discourage you cleaning them out.

There is no lore behind it other than an event called the "Obraxis Prime Massacre" but the CEO himself said the decision to exclude guns was related to Sandy Hook rather than a gameplay factor.

Another example of the game turning out good on accident.

the only "quest markers" in subnautica are lifepod and seabase beacons, both things that make sense for your HUD to display in-universe and you can toggle them on/off whenever
one of the things subnautica does so well is just leaving you to your own devices to explore around and eventually you'll find the necessary stuff/location needed to progress
your PDA pushes you in the right direction or gives hints occasionally but it's only ever in response to you going somewhere or picking something up

killing leviathans by either method (knife/drill) gives me the same feeling as doing some weird exploit to break a game

that said, i'm glad you can, it doesn't add anything to the game but I think making them invincible would be lame in a different way

How would you make sure Subnautica 2 turns out good?
>Make landmasses rare and feel like a safe haven from the endless ocean
>Make the fish actually dangerous instead of just a bit spooky until you realise they really cannot hurt you
>Make the map a bit larger than SN1, hand craft it
>Focus on the base building parts so your bases are useful in some way beyond storage and crafting
>Hire a competent developer so the game runs without every object popping up 2 feet in front of you
What else?

Subnautica had shitty gameplay and ran like ass when it came out, and was carried hard by its atmosphere, which was like 80% sound/music (visuals were ok but let's be honest they were nothing amazing).

What did they do? Booted their sound guy for having the wrong political beliefs. The whole fucking point of the game was pretty much to be a vehicle for Simon Chylinski's music. Krafton should give him a big fat paycheck to come in and do the sound for Subnautica 2, if they do I'll buy a copy, even if the SDS retards are involved. Or I'll at least buy a copy of the soundtrack.

Well the main thing I'd do is copy early Subnautica rather than late Subnautica. I'd focus more on interesting ocean biomes with lots of species of fish & plant life, ideally with varying behavioural patterns that you learn through observation and which interact with each other, instead of LOOK WE MADE ANOTHER GIANT SEA MONSTER THIS ONE'S EVEN BIGGER LOOK HOW BIG WE SCALED THE MODEL!!!11!!1!!8

But also if the game's going to have long crafting chains (early Subnautica did not; crafting chains got longer throughout the beta), add some kind of factory automation systems, including mining. Yes, in the early game, going out and hunting down samples and bits of stuff is fun. Once you've done it a few times, though, it quickly becomes tedious. I'd rather just not have long crafting chains, but if they're going to be there, then fuck it, give me Underwater Satisfactory.

Have the facilities actually be useful and relevant to gameplay not just the story. Like make them have their own teleporter network, better automated crafters, generate resources, etc... Like maybe tie this into base building so your goal is to hook up a bunch of bases into a network to reactivate all the facilities.
Honestly maybe even just split the game up into multiple maps with fast travel between them, the back and forth is nightmarish and the seatruck doesn't help at all.

Make the game deeper and darker in more open water and not just cramped tunnels full of glowing giant crystals. None of the monsters have ever been as threatening as just the empty water, that's what makes the shelf edge scary, not the big awkward glowy snakes. There's lots of cool unexplored ideas like travelling along the floor to get between high spots, "whale falls" in the open sea full of weird creepy bugs, etc...
Like the real ocean isn't jam packed with giant carniverous electric snakes but it's damn fucking scary anyway because the water itself is the biggest threat.

Okay I got it. You can make a stun gun that is really quick to whip out and use to stun some creature for like 15 seconds max. However to make ammo for the stun gun you need to kill a much larger and dangerous creature, like something as big as the sea snakes that lived inside those mushrooms in Subnautica 1. Creatures larger than bone sharks are immune to the stun gun effect, they only get visibly upset.

instead of overlong wishing lists that are guaranteed to turn it into shit the other way start with something simple. like dumping multiplayer so it does not end up eating up resources and time that could go into the dev of the base game

dont see any point in acking leviathans. their presence is kino with their sound design while sometimes giving a little hull damage to the otherwise invulnerable cyclops. removing them just detracts from the experience while their path finding and clipping issues alone guarantees they are not much of a threat

>cant wait to figure out how to ignore their intentions
>leviathans are now invulnerable
>they produce critical niche resources so you have to get close to them once in a while
what now

remove voiced protag nobody gets immersed because some shit brownoid actor is saying "whoa! oh man! whoa! that's crazy!" in response to everything
focus on the atmosphere which below zero has none of
stop putting oxygen refilling things underwater because it trivializes the one mechanic of the game

find a way to trap them with player made structures so they can't move and can be industrial cattle farmed for their resources.

I swam down to the end game location because oxygen plants made it trivial, it was so fucking pathetic.

I also got lost in cave mazes because they used O2 plants as an excuse to make stupidly hard to navigate mazes.

it wasn't really a fluke per se more like an amalgamation of ideas that had never been done before executed well enough
otoh ig you could say it was a fluke since they don't really seem to know what those ideas are despite coming up with them

yeah it's so bad. they probably brought a bunch of retards in to play test and found they kept drowning so they ruined the whole game for everyone

pretty much all of these except most importantly, the AI/animations should be something they take a massive step further because the least scary thing about subnautica is how easy it becomes to map out specific small zones that leviathans patrol like a metal gear solid mook and how little the creatures interact with eachother/how clunky they are when you actually interact with them

Leviathans dont need to be unkillable to be scary, they just need to be unpredictable, faster, smarter and more "realistic" so overpowering them underwater is basically an impossible feat. Maybe compensate for this by adding increased stealth systems to the game so you have any hope of hiding from them both in and outside vehicles

Callisto was one of the worst games I've ever played. What the fuck are they thinking?
