you feel like you're at a cutting edge tech demo in the 90s

>what am i in for?
An absolute dogshit trash game

>absolutely atrocious camera constantly getting stuck on terrain, spazzing out, facing the wrong direction, refusing to go where you want it to
>slippery and awkward controls, especially in underwater and snow levels
>2D Mario's momentum and physics work in a 2D environment where you always have a perfect view and perspective of the action; it's significantly worse in a 3D environment where you are constantly fighting the camera and there are fundamental limitations to perspective/depth perception
>these momentum and physics are especially egregious when the movement is relative to aforementioned awful automatic camera that refuses to go where you want
>constantly boots you out after every star and makes you retread each stage a half dozen times all the way from the beginning of the stage with a tiny stupid piecemeal change
>dial a combo system for platforming
>overall level/enemy/hazard design are extremely basic and boring
>constant easter egg hunt for random bullshit grows old very quick
It feels like a glorified fucking tech demo for 3D movement. You need fucking 6 inch thick nostalgia goggles to still convince yourself it holds up today

When I was a kid and I first played the DS version I didn't know how to access the levels.

We need to call up Kojima, get permission for his original character "Camera" to get added in the next smash game

The game is pretty good until you get to the second floor with Tall Tall Mountain and Wet Dry World and then the problems really start to show up. Most people only remember it fondly because they only play the first 3 levels or they watch people who live on this game on YouTube.

This is pretty accurate. I wouldn't go as far as this but I can't say he's wrong. Mario does this retarded thing where he does a U-turn that's about 1-2 Marios wide and it can get you killed. If you start moving forward then move backwards he doesn't do this. Why did anyone think this was a good idea is beyond me.

you'll be able to tell this was designed before the 3d platformer really existed as it has a few control problems future 3d platformers don't have
if you're trying to reposition yourself in a small area, your best bet is jumping and then using the stick while you're airborne to drift towards wherever you're going because mario has to physically hit a u turn to change directions
if you're playing on the pc port you should be able to make the camera less shitty but otherwise it's going to be tough to work with

i suppose you could also hold the crouch button and then use the stick to crawl around
that might help you adjust your position if you don't want to risk accidentally jumping off an edge but i don't remember how well that'll work so user discretion is advised
