>dominates 360/ps3 era
>fumbles the bag hard the next two generations
Was it their over reliance on gamepass and becoming more of a service oriented company rather than a hardware oriented one?
In theory, you'd think letting people play your games on whatever device they wanted would be good, but they seemed to lack the one thing people want... games.

Are you too young to remember the marketing for the XOne? Microsoft poorly marketed the XOne and thatโ€™s why it fucking failed horribly:
>$100 more expensive than the PS4
>Xbox One online requirement and game sharing controversy which led to Sony even making fun of them
>Horrible exclusives compared to Sony (The situation was even worse because Halo turned to shit after Bungie left)

Really the dedicate game consumer turned on Microsoft halfway through the 360 generation when they pivoted to kinect-slop while Sony was putting out bangers. The XBone's problems wasn't just the DRM but also the sales pitch of it being a TV and Kinect-first console, doubling down on the most unpopular aspects of the 360. Microsoft just never has been and never will be a video game or hardware company. They just got lucky with the PS3 stumbling because Kutaragi lost his mind while designing it.

I'm 31 now and was heavily invested in following major game conferences and events back then, and I talk about this situation quite often because it's largely what made Sony the way they are now.
>Xbox has a solid grip on hardcore gaming
>PS3 fumbles the start of generation with bad pricing and complex hardware
>Devs struggle to make PS3 games, but Xbox is easy
>Nintendo has the casual market by the balls, meanwhile
>Wii is a MASSIVE hit, and brings in new gamers
>Reach mid-point or so of the console cycle
>PS3 recovers from its bad start, momentum now picks up and they're head to head with X360 on content and exclusives
>MSoft and Sony see Nintendo's success and want some of those new casuals
>They both invest in their own motion gimmicks
>Xbox goes all in on Kinect, prioritize it over their bread and butter mature Gears / Halo / etc titles
>Sony has PS Move, which is just a wiimote but for PS3
This is the part where things get crazy.
>Casual market is so big that MSoft decides it's time to totally commit to the Kinect
>Sony and MSoft are about to launch new hardware reveals
>Xbox goes first with Xbox One with a reveal several months early
>They reveal SEVERAL controversial choices including no more used games, mandatory Kinect with every unit, and online connection required to use the console
>Gamers rebel hugely
>Don Mattrick (head of Xbox) has a devastating interview where he says if you can't get online, stick with X360
https://youtu.be/bTAKSBvuT-A
>Sony (who I bet was going to do the same thing, ironically) see all the backlash and make their entire marketing about how they are NOT doing all that stuff
See >>714250070 for an example of their strategy.
>PS4 walks across the finish line without needing to do anything all that big
>In fact, they got away with adding a subscription for PSN (was free before PS4) with no backlash in Xbox's shadow
>MSoft ends up buckling under pressure but the damage is already done
The Xbox brand NEVER recovered.

Sounds like made up cope. Remember the PS Move? That shit was horrible too. Nobody was doing well during that short retarded motion sensing gaming period.
>They just got lucky with the PS3 stumbling because Kutaragi lost his mind while designing it.
Yeah, I agree. I swear. It always comes down to marketing and the initial price point of the console release. Even though the 360 was a overheating giant pile of shit that required a subscription to play online, it was well loved because Microsoft marketed the shit out of it and it was cheaper than the PS3 on release

Nintendo was. Hugely. And for the record, Kinect was a massive success for Xbox 360 too. But they didn't know when to quit.

Nintendo, much like Xbox One, also stumbled into the next generation with a total flop and it sank them to all time lows financially. Switch makes everyone forget that Wii U devastated Nintendo.

i didnโ€™t bring them up because they almost always win the console war. thatโ€™s why you always hear ps3 vs 360 and not ps3 vs wii vs 360. hell, nintendo revived the gaming industry during the 80s so im not surprised they win often

The Cell processor has done irreperable damage to Sony.

I appreciate the autistic vision of it, but now games are destined to die with the console. That means even "PS3 Streaming (which is still fucking garbage eventhough my PS5 is wired to my router about 1 foot away)" will end someday.

We all ended up in the Xbox One discless future and nobody cares at all. I just find that so interesting. Boiling frog shit.

Was thinking about this too.

I remember when Achievements came out, and the Playstation crowd would shit talk them all the time. Xboys need Bill Gates headpats to enjoy games etc. Now every "ecosystem" has an achievement system and Playstation went in with it harder than Xbox every did.

But I think achievements ruined games forever myself.

I just think it's funny how Xbox called everything. Even showed how console online was done. PS2 online was a fucking joke held together with toothpicks and duct tape compared to original Xbox. And that "one username across all games on a dedicated console network" method from Xbox became the standard.

>Was it their over reliance on gamepass and becoming more of a service oriented company rather than a hardware oriented one?
Gamepass was born out of necessity.

>buy 2 dozen studios and announce 2 dozen games
>total radio silence on all those games for 5 years
>xbox has literally nothing coming up because their studios can't get shit done
>phil realizes they don't know how to make quality games
>settles for sub-par titles to push gamepass with
>xbox division is barely profitable
>microsoft overlords are happy for now

Seriously, games they announced all the way back in 2018 are nowhere to see. Absolute radio silence.

>no state of decay 3
>no perfect dark
>no gears e day
>no fable
>no everwild
>no fallout
>no elder scrolls
>no routine

If those games would come out over the next 12 months and they all are solid 9s it would be the greatest redemption story in the history of entertainment. But Phil has already given up.

Yup. The writing on the wall has been there for years and anyone paying any attention at all knew that the slippery slope towards a non-physical future was inevitable.
Truth be told, the vast majority of people will always choose convenience.

One of the reasons I miss Sega in the gaming market. The "I need to be better to do better" wouldn't let the Xbox division to reach at that point.
And honestly, even with the perfect view of the past, I think that the biggest mistake from Microsoft was to believe that market tendency was actually a market change. Nintendo got fucked up because they basically were releasing a 2005 console in 2013 basically following a market that die in 2010.
If Microsoft has released a minimum of ten exclusive games on that year, the Xbox One would have an easier life.

>lets first party studios implode and shut down because nobody's going to play COD, sports or GTA4/5 on anything else anyway
>lots of perpetual online-connection demands ignoring the fact that their main audience is the US and this was the early 2010s only just broadband subsidies and infrastructure projects got off the ground and had yet to yield results for a lot of flyover America
>correctly predicts PS4's price and then decides they're going to make the Xbone more expensive anyway
>wants to be first to market/first to media so early it lets Sony secretly backtrack on all their online-only bullshit and make smarmy ads like >>714250070

If Xbox's endgoal was making money then yeah they can do that as a hyperpublisher running game pass. Phil's longterm goal was just being able to build up something of a userbase by rebuilding their first party output through acquisitions since AAA development is impossible to build from the ground up, but was basically overridden from the top because they would rather just sell multiplats and have cash now rather than assume that releasing exclusives would mean people would buy their console.

Mind you the Xbone still launched with more games than the PS4. If it had a competitive price, no Kinect, no online-only shit and something resembling funding exclusives or rebuilding first party output early on and not just waiting for Phil Spencer to take the reigns and try to right the ship, I think the state of the big three would be a lot different in 2025. Well, Nintendo would still be relatively insulated from the horrifying trends of the late 2010s anyway.

I think you mean the PC/Wii era.
Xbox died because the console market died.
>But the PS4 got so many sales, how could the console market be dead
Just because the console market died doesn't mean that that all of that normalfag momentum didn't go anywhere, normalfags had been bombarded with "console is mainstream" messaging for the last 10 years.
Face it, consoles died the moment that computers didn't need dedicated chips to make bing bing wahoo sounds efficiently.

achievements is literally a big checklist with 99% of garbage

you know what they were before Microsoft fucked it up?
UNLOCKABLES
you beat the game on hardest difficulty, you got a special skin, or special gun, or cheats

now you get
PING
[x] you marked another thing off your checklist

completely pointless and retarded

there are only a few games were at least some skill is required, like Binary Domain coop, or Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered

and there are even morons nowadays, who either don't buy a game because it has no achievement checklist, or the achievements are TOO DIFFICULT
