Shareholders read some graphs and articles online and think the majority of players wants DEI shit because the internet has become an incredibly loud resonance chamber. The ESG ratings also scare companies a lot; they also know game "journalists" will automatically look for any trace of DEI stuff in games, see whether it's well implemented or not and react accordingly, further shifting the reviews and final scores, which matter a lot to shareholders and CEOs. Finally, often the devs themselves are the very epitome of DEI shit.
In Veilguard's case, this was even more true. The series has always been known to pander to gays and trannies, and since 90% of that Bioware team was made of trans people, gays, non-binary dudes (Traash is Weekes' spokeperson, basically, he shared his world views through her) they leaped at the chance of filling the game with their trash. Pity it backfired, because it was written so horrendously, the series' lore ruined so deeply, even die-hard fans and game "journalists" found it impossible to like it.
