Beyond SE wanting to make money, what was the point of remaking Final Fantasy VII? What did the remakes add to the story that was necessary and worth it?

Final Fantasy VII is absolutely timeless, and deserves to be regarded as one of the greatest video games of all time.

The remakes are cannibalistic. They aren’t inspired like the original, they’re only an imitation with modern graphics. And most of you gobbled these remakes up. What do they add other than money into SE’s pockets?

The game will be defended to the death by people who would have loved it no matter what. All they want is more time with the characters. It doesn't matter if it's tedious, boring, nonsensical, badly written, insulting to your intelligence, utter trash. You could make a 100 hour game set in Seventh Heaven and they'd like it, because they get more time with the characters. At some point they became obsessed with the characters, but don't actually care about the story or the game they're in.

7 was never my fav FF gotta admit (prefer 8,9,10), but the remake was so tedious to play. Nu-FF mmo type quests just never interested me, and some levels like the scaffolding one just made me quit the game 10h in. I also can't stand the dead looking anime faces that every NPC and character has, they seriously all look the same. Just music and "atmosphere" isn't enough.

Isn't true. The bossfights, and overall setting of Midgar were done very well. There is a good game buried beneath the bloat

Rebirth has one of the best combat systems, and the level of character customization in the game is great.

Ff7 og looks and plays worse than a flash game (remember that)
Any praise you have got og can be chalked to nostalgia and if you prefer the story of og you're no different to ppl who prefer book version to movie adaptations because it has more 'soul'

But thats the thing, the original does have soul because it’s permanently engraved in the collective consciousness of gamers since it’s debut, as still IS relevant as evidenced by SE incessant attempts to recreate the same magic. It’s a beautiful game with pure soul, and your contrarianism does not accrue you any internet points. Also most books ARE better than film remakes. I can only think of The Shining as the exception for this.
