I get that the game isn't having characters explain everything directly, but it's not that hard to get invested in the journey of undoing Giygas' corruption while experiencing small story arcs that slowly scale in stakes as you progress further. If we wanted to be reductive like that, Undertale's only events that matter are the beginning and end as well, but the bonds you build with those characters on your journey are what make the True Pacifist ending so satisfying (and Genocide so painful), and likewise Earthbound asks the same of you to be invested in that journey so that the payoff itself is something to behold. It's why it asks you for your real name (not Ness' name) twice, to make sure that when it says YOU are praying for them in the final battle, it knows you mean it.

I really don't think Paula, Jeff and (we agree) Poo are all that compelling, is all. I did quite like the Jeff section as a change of pace, though.
Obviously looking at everything literally, it does seem chaotic and malicious. The game doesn't do that justice though. It's slowly paced, things are mostly still the same, and a lot of the later "questlines" are boring mundane fetch quests.
I did honestly find it incredibly hard to get invested. The "My Thoughts..." section was good, but only Magicant was really enough for me to feel fully invested in Ness, even if only for a little.
Undertale makes you sit with its cast directly for a little longer (if you're playing as intended taking a few tries to beat it in full), and is a much shorter game, which I think does a better job making you grow attached.
I think I would like Earthbound way more if it was a little shorter and quicker. My main issue is every issue feels worse and everything good about it gets dampened by the pace. I would've found it sweet if not for that, probably.

We've been over this too many times. If the situation really was that simple then the majority of battles in the game could be auto-solved by simply telling the monsters that their actions hurts you so that they stop. The fact that apparently won't work and more elaborate ACTing is necessarily puts the monsters in a poor moral light.

I don't actually think it would have been that much of an issue. The stinger at the end of Chapter 3 alone would have been enough to set plot discussions ablaze.

The only real problem would be people assuming Chapter 4 takes place in the shelter given how Chapter 3 ends, something might have needed to be done about that. Also discovering how little a difference being on Snowgrave makes would suck but that's a problem as it is.

The main idea is that he's someone that existed, made some kind of wacky device and fell into it, getting shredded and spread through reality, the memory of him being forgotten.
Also the fast travel NPC warns you about "The man that speaks in hands" with one of the logs of the odl Laboratory being written in Windings, the symbol font that has a lot of hands in it. With the idea of him being an skeleton coming from sans and Papyrus being named from the fonts they use to speak.
People latched to the idea of him and reached the obvious conclusion that whoever is speaking to US is Gaster. Also there's a couple of cryptic rng based NPCs that describe the idea of him, the royal scientist that fell into his creation and got scrambled arround reality, they only appear based on some random FUN value, except one that was added in one of the ports that tells you about their neighbors kid, "Suzy". They tell you that "the time for you to meet will come soon" and the music goes mute with the npc having a color change before dissaearing.
He also had a "song" in Undertale, and that "song" is the sound that comes from the phone when you try to use it in the dark world, similar to what the addisons describe when talking about whoever Spamton was talking to on the phone.
