Reminder that Xbox only exists because of Playstation. Bill Gates thought about someone sitting in their living room, watching their Sony TV with their Sony sound system and their Sony Playstation and seethed the fuck out about it.
At one point, he came very close to cancelling the project because his dream of people using spreadsheet and excel on their living room TV was not coming to fruition. All it took was someone in the room saying "What about Sony?" so get him to sign a billion dollar check to the Xbox team.
First place doesn't matter to them, second place doesn't matter to them. They're perfectly content right where they are, engaging in industry poisoning practices like buying studios and not letting them make any games and normalizing paid online subscriptions. As long as they're undercutting Sony, which has been and will always be their true goal.

Microsoft never cared about the home console market.
The Xbox only exists because Sony pulled a "the PS2 is a computer, actually" bullshit to get around retarded EU tax laws on "luxury goods", and it worked so well Gates thought they were serious, so not wanting to be dethroned from the home computer market like Nintendo was from the home console market, he ordered his engineers to come up with a response.
Once he realized Sony didn't actually want to mess on his turf, he wanted to can the whole thing, but the Xbox team convinced him this console business could be profitable, so it was allowed to continue normally until the Xbone fiasco, when Microsoft lost faith in the brand and it became yet another legacy product used for data harvesting and subscription collecting.
They are more than happy to let Sony or Nintendo or Valve or whatever prosper, as that means more companies hiring their "cloud solutions", which is what rakes in the dough nowadays.
