If a game has joinable factions how much/little should the membership in a faction affect & limit the gameplay? Should it make other factions hostile to you if they have poor relations with the faction you join for example?
In shit like Skyrim for example, you can basically become the leader of every guild in the game with neglible gameplay impact which is fucking retarded in my opinion.

Morrowind did it best. Choosing one means rejecting all enemy factions. I'd even go further and make NPCs openly hostile depending on where and when you meet.

I like how it actually takes some effort to join the different houses in Morrowind. You can't just waltz into their bases and imedeately be welcomed as a new member.

>make NPCs openly hostile
making them instantly recognize you and attack on sight is also retarded, morrowind was fine as is, which is ability to make them hostile by attacking
