Only Crash Team Racing follows this mantra of items being secondary to skill. The items were already busted in the beta build and the game is slow as shit which is its biggest problem, not the blaance.

cross worlds will probably be better than 8D just because other sonic racers have been better than mario kart. mkw is a bit harder to judge since the good parts of it deliver something completely different from every other kart racer. Unfortunately the only way to play the good part of mkw is in timetrials. intermission races are probably on par with TSR with how shit they are.

It was made by a new branch at Sumo Digital at the time. It only sold so much because it had a bunch of different Sonic characters and 3 movies have come out since, plus I'm sure it got more players when the CrossWorlds beta came out due to curiosity

I played the network test and fuck no, nowhere even close. Item spam was Mario Kart levels, handling wasn't as good and you couldn't even fail tricks. Nothing in this God forsaken world will ever be as good as SART.
