The same way Marvel did it. By marketing to adults who refuse to grow up.

By being the only videogame-focused console maker left.

Multimedia conglomerates like Sony and Microsoft will never understand the trick.

Nintendo's focus is insane. Companies have this tendency of overshooting and having crazy ambitious goals, doing a billion different things badly meanwhile Nintendo's focus for decades has been "let's make great games." Everything else was secondary or not important.

Without even going crazy on the analysis, they've avoided several pitfalls of the industry.

1. They actually nurtures and cherishes their brands and properties and don't just discard all of them every generation.
2. They've kept their output largely very gameplay focused.
3. They actually pay their developers relatively well.
4. They have been very careful careful when it has come to budgeting and haven't bought into the idea that a bigger budget for a bigger project will automatically or even probably result in bigger returns.

And yet their new games are derivative bing bing wahoo slop. They're hard carried by their former glory. Yeah, SM64 and OoT were impressive, yeah the DS was a fun idea. No, modern nintendo deserve nothing

Out of all the players in the industry. Nintendo's business is the one business that has software sales and hardware sales the most intertwined.
And that's a GOOD thing since the coupling disincentivizes many stupid and shortsighted business practises.

They can't just throw software under the bus because software profits fund hardware production. And they can't just throw hardware under the bus because hardware profits fund software production.
And they can't overspend on software production because hardware needs investment too. And they can't overspend on hardware either because software production needs investment too.

It might sound simple as fuck, and it kind of is. But the rest of the industry has long since moved away from plain business like this.
Both Playstation and Xbox don't make much from being a BUSINESS, they make money from being a platform. Nintendo makes tons of money from being a platform too, but Nintendo are undeniably still a BUSINESS. And since Nintendo's business rather sizeable, you would need quite the argument to convince Nintendo to give it up in favour of whatever else and to rely on just being a platform or whatever.

TL;DR, Playstation's and Xbox's software and hardware businesses have been almost completely decoupled all while their software and hardware businesses have been largely down prioritised in general. Nintendo are genuinely unique in that their business still relies on producing stuff in a reliable fashion.
