microsoft-is-closing-down-xbox-studio-the-initiative-with-v0-WupP-wac7ATCKfRNdQ0eq_E5oR2_5BsGudemPfNVm34
>formed specifically to be Microsoft's answer to Naughty Dog or Crystal Dynamics
>Microsoft sink a small fortune into them, recruiting staff from big name studios including Insomniac, Sony Santa Monica, Rockstar, Blizzard and the original Kojima Productions
>all pitches for an original IP get rejected
>after two years of nothing happening, get put on to a Perfect Dark remake
>staff turnover is huge due to project mismanagement and general employee dissatisfaction
>virtually nothing to show after years of development time
>Crystal Dynamics have to be brought in to help because development has turned into such a shitshow
>game gets cancelled anyway and what's left of the studio is disbanded

How the fuck did this get bungled so badly?

The games industry has a supergroup problem

Supergroups died because it turns out getting the greatest musicians to collab just leads to mediocre stuff. They're better off staying solo.

These new AAA companies take the talented people left at legacy studios, consolidate them with a very vague idea and tell them that there's a fleet of 1500 Indians to help pick up the slack while they workshop a product

Obviously it's unsustainable

Why do these supergroup studios so often go nowhere? Sony had a similar one a few years ago with some ex-Rockstar and Naughty Dog personnel that didn't even get formally unveiled before it was killed

why would they when they know they can get funded for 10 years to make nothing, and they can just fail sideways or upwards to another company and do it again until they're 60.

Would UNRELEASED PROJECT (20XX-20YY) repeatedly not look bad on a resume?

Perfect Dark is unironically the main reason I bought an Xbox this gen
But I also was looking forward to Halo Infinite, Starfield, and potentially The Evil Within 3

Not to be rude but I don't really know how anyone could be excited for Microsoft's first-party stuff going into this gen considering how badly they bungled the whole eighth gen

This studio is embarassment to be quite honest. Whoever has tenured in the studio should be outright rejected. Microsoft partly to be blamed too for their stupid hands off approach on game development. What a disaster. On top of that, Phil Spencer haven't resign yet???
