whenever i played tf2 as a kid i always played spy, i was awful at it, but every kill felt like 10 kills with another class, but after a certain age point i just stopped playing spy. i don't know why, and now when i go back i can't get nearly the amount of backstabs i did as a kid, it's all revolver kills.
anyone else experience something like this?

i just sit around with the cloak and dagger and wait for some easy targets. i'm too slow for the stock watch and not pro enough for the dead ringer (i used it all the time before the nerf). but yeah, you can kill a ton of low hp classes by just surprising them with the gun.

Spy was a new thing back then, so it was easier to fool people
Unless you have interp set to 1 trillion you won't get a lot of backstabs

spy is a weak and situational class by design.
if you had a decently fast class who could be invisible and instakill people be any better than he already is, it'd probably ruin the game.

playing spy can be a lot of work for a meager reward and spy's impact is typically inversely proportional to how much the enemy team is already dealing with spies. going soldier/demo/medic/heavy is guaranteed value on the other hand.

Just play it a lot till you get used to it, once you feel somewhat comfortable start trying going for more risky stabs.
I was awful spy and I did that, these days I'm not the greatest but I can pull off some nice stab chains and wacky side-stabs.

skill issue. Spy just needs practice and game knowledge. fooling players may be more difficult but no one is 100% spy proof.

The revolver is deceptively strong. Few other classes have an accurate midrange hitscan, and players tend to forget that Spy has a gun.

You probably didn't care as much about dying, or playing remotely well. Spy as a class is about being a risk taker, and the conservative mindset will earn you very little stabs.

Spy is the only class that can fuck up Engineer constructions. Going behind the enemy lines and destroying a teleporter is big.

Demoman is a more effective anti-Engineer class.
Besides the teleporters, Spy's ability to stop an Engineer deflates the second there is more than one Engineer and their sentries overlap ranges.

i thought the same thing, but i think the idea is the demoman can't get as far back as the spy can because the demoman is busy on the front line, otherwise yeah soldier and demo fucks.

I would love some replacements even if they are useless, or gimmicky.
Like a spy camera that you place somewhere, then you can hold reload button or something to switch to that camera's view.
