How the fuck did they do it? It's like every enemy has it's own soundtrack. You walk through a cave and the music changes to a muted rendition. Each area has like 5 different tracks. It's fucking insane

The music is definitely the best part of the game but thats actually quite common in this genre. If you're a jrpg style game and your music isn't amazing something its like a canary in a coal mine. I remember Metaphor was getting ost of the year nods too, that award is half jrpg nominations literally every year.

Must have been a slow year. Almost every boss fight reused the same 2 or 3 tracks and I'd only consider one of those halfway decent. Most of the rest of that soundtrack sucked shit.

You think so? Most of my favourite artists/bands need 3-5 years to record one album, ~12 songs. E33 probably has around 200 songs. The OST has 150+, but it doesn't actually have all of them.
Even assuming half of tracks are rearrangements, that's still 100 pieces.

Because they do everything themselves, and they also need to tour to promote their albums.
Whereas Sandfall hired a chamber orchestra of professional musicians who recorded their stuff in a few months.

I like E33's soundtrack because it goes heavy on a lot of leitmotifs without making it the entire identity of the soundtrack. Final Fantasy has had huge problems with this in recent years. Sokken is the kind of guy that will compose one composition and try to twist it as much as humanly possible to the point where it gets tiring and its been pretty noticeable in a lot of other games in recent years too

Well, I'd like to see some examples. I tried to google and only found that Bach wrote over 1000 pieces in his whole life (that's probably ~8 Clair Obscurs), Mozart 600+ and so on.
They aren't exactly just "professional composers worth their salt", so it still doesn't seem to me like composing 100+ in 5 years is a piece of cake for an average composer.

The composer has been a fan of vidya OSTs and said in an interview it was his life’s mission. You’d go ham too if you got a chance to make your dream game or work on your favorite game series. The game had a long dev cycle too so they were able to really polish stuff like that.

Never said anything about average composers. Most games don't require 8+ hours of music for them, but I'm pretty sure someone like Jeremy Soule or Hitoshi Sakimoto could easily whip up a 10+ hours suite if the devs asked.

Also this >>714361969 anon has the right idea. A lot of the ideas, chord progressions, melodies and instrumentation/arrangement choices get reused one way or the other. It's not like Testard wrote 300+ completely distinct pieces.

you can write a song a day and more, if you grind, if you work as a hired full time composer.

after 2-3 years of doing this you have a big catalogue from which you can pick the best ones and get them into production

this was fairly standart practice for decades

you seen the early wips?
they had completely different art style, and while the cast stayed the same since original script draft, the final one was created 2 years in
1 year isnt a lot, you will have a loooot of work prototyping gameplay, creating mood boards, thinking of audio cues and enemy sounds, trying music blending and other systems for fights, deciding how cinematics will look, etc etc

if anything going by their hiring decisions, they only had the vertical cut that they woild build into a full game 2 years in, then 3 years to make the game

He composed based on concept arts
I assume he was given a lot of creative freedom and his music became the game and not the other way around where artists are constantly being monitored by higher ups and such.
But I think the whole game's been developed that way, because the lead dev had a real talent for picking and choosing his team, they ended up in complete osmosis and everyone understood what the game needed.

Everything is real, there isn't a single thing that didn't matter, it has all led to this.

Yea, forget about all that boring expedition to save the world stuff nobody cared about. It was all made up. It's time for some gripping family drama. Isn't it oh so sad how their son/brother died? Enjoy.

What? The fuck do you mean? Only Gustave has been more or less erased (he's been mentioned twice and off handedly at that so far in Act III) and Sciel just fucked Verso again after he betrayed them (again) and genocided Lumière. The apprentices got 2 lines and were killed instantly afterwards. Now I'm supposed to care about these literal who painters? I don't like any of them. The writers should've killed them all in the fire for all I care.

Fuck me man the people of Lumière went through so much shit and had to sacrifice themselves every year to give their children a chance to live and I'm supposed to care that the french hyper billionaires lost their fag son to a fight with a group of people called the fucking WRITERS ARE YOU KIDDING ME WRITERS VS PAINTERS THIS IS THE FINAL ACT OF THE GAME WHAT IS THIS STUPID SHIT. I don't even care about finding the rest of the logs, they didn't matter. Fuck this game man, and after everyone sucked its dick off and after such a strong start it devolved to this what a fucking waste of my time.

I still think it was a good game and a month later I can focus on the good bits, but at the moment of the reveal I was fucking livid as well. Might be the most horrible twist I've seen in a video game.

Standalone music is much more difficult to produce.

I literally don't know what this nigga does since I two shot him. Wasn't even an optimized build lmao. Actually that's like 95% of Act III side content bosses.
