I've recently been watching MASH with my mother. She grew up watching it when it was airing, and almost every episode she says something that leaves me in stunned silence at how incapable of understanding what the show is saying, unable to comprehend anything beyond the basic jokes. When Henry died she couldn't understand why they killed him instead of writing him off with a happy ending. Every episode of the show is about the senseless loss of life in a pointless war, and she can't see the obvious meaning behind how he died for nothing despite her actively protesting Vietnam at the time.
It isn't a generation gap, some people just don't see depth.
