1:Covid lockdown inflated spending on certain types of home entertainment such as video games.
When lockdown lifted, it spending was guaranteed to go down as people spent it on other types of entertainment instead.

2: we're just in a bad economic spot and people are shifting their spending towards necessities only to save money

Hard to say from a headline. Are they actually spending less per person or are they spending less overall because the youth just play games less when they grew up with infinite free online entertainment. The last analysis I bothered to read showed the people who still bother playing games are spending more and playing more but on fewer games per year. Which is why the industry is in a scramble for efficiency. It's now a zero sum game where the only way to grow is to steal players from another game.
