Are alternatives where there's something similtar to the MC being killed but without being necesarelly a permadeath or getting a game over?

Like how GTA instead of game over simply resets the player state in a nearby hospital.

Pathologic 2 gives you permanent debuffs to your save file when you die, even saves that you made before the death so you can’t just savescum them away.

Now Imagine if the Boss didn't reset his HP after you heal in the hospital after losing to him.

But basically the boss could get into an injured state, and resetting the boss fight after a loss feels more like a continuation with an injured boss over a real fight.

Which could allow noobs to grind the boss, even if they lose multiple times, and could avoid a potential game over.

Outward just gives you a "defeat scenario" every time you die
Where you get a little load screen that tells you you got dragged off by a savior or a wild animal or thrown in jail whenever you die, and the game just continues from there.
Some defeat scenarios are actually mildly benefitial (most aren't)
There's also an option to turn on a chance of death as one of the options when you die.
Probably one of my favourite death systems in a game.

Surprised it hasn't been mentioned, but that's basically the premise of Death Stranding. Main character simply returns to life when he dies even in a boss fight, but if he gets eaten by a monster it sets off a super nuke that destroys the whole area.
