the real answer is a mix of the fact that the software that monitors battery life isn't aligned with the battery's de facto capacity, and because the software lies about the battery life curve to percent health, since the last 5 percent actually hold a lot more juice than you might be expecting, and certainly more than 5 percent at a 50% battery reading.

It's not. You can buy a $2000 state of the art gaming laptop and the battery will last 2.5 hours without even running a game.
