As far as games go, little changed since those systems aside some graphical, size, and performance upgrades but it basically functions the same way with similar development standards. People make polygons then add textures to it and either do 2d or 3d, script behaviors, nothing really that groundbreaking since that particular era. Maybe in the rendering department for lighting and shading I guess?
So really it would be returning hardware styles or aesthetics as retro; and maybe some themes or aesthetics of the games. Indie games are always making something new using older styles but many times it's out of necessity or individual limitations (simpler to work with), relatively easier to do pixel art than the whole 3D model pipeline
