The Finals is an example of a game that wouldn't be feasible if the Stop Killing Games movement got what they wanted. Your response?

this game would be much MUCH bigger if it had custom servers that you can host yourself

It's a free game. They're not contractually obligated to keep it playable offline.

some professional dog walkers want all games official sevrers to stay online forever and for devs to be legally required to update their games forever

The non-retarded answer: games you pay for will be required to be playable even after the devs no longer want to run servers for them. In other words >>714422385

Games that are online only should either implement a single player/offline mode or release server code when they are shut down

Did you know?
Resident Evil 5 on PC used Games for Windows Live for its online services.
When it got shut down, they updated the game to use steamworks for online play.

Too bad Capcom didn't do the same for Lost Planet 1 & 2, where they just used a modded DLL to bypass GFWL and run offline-mode only, which also makes you lose existing saves.

They said the same thing about Titanfall and within a decade players were hosting it themselves with literally zero assistance from the developer.
It doesn't have to be working perfectly, just give them fucking something to start off of so they don't have to reverse engineer that shit from scratch.

You could get 'any' game working without assistance from the dev, or network captures, but you're looking at a sub 0.1% of programmers on the planet that have both the patience, and the knowledge to throw at a game at Ghidra/Olly/whatever to decipher it. Nevermind if shit is encrypted or behind an anti-cheat, which you have to deal with first.

The more shit that's server driven (especially game logic, or AI things missing in the case of Titanfall 2 on private servers), the less chance of people restoring something since it's a whole other system they have to re-implement as faithfully as they can, assuming there's been any research done on it while the servers were live.

You're not going to see any active modern game with a focus on MTX transactions to have a dedicated server on the side, since it gives pirates an avenue to bypass everything.

Yes, which is why instead of going "ooh our game is impossible to just run on a dedicated server soz" they should give as much as they're able to people who will do the work to make it even semi-functional for free if they have what they need. Titanfall was not better off being unplayable than it was being playable but with broken AI.

The entire point of SGG is if devs decide to shut down servers people can set up their own dedicated servers.
>Focus on MTX
Well, they shouldn't turn off the servers then lmao.

All I'd ask for as a dev is remove anti-cheat, find some means of decoupling your networking infrastructure from its host (eg, If it relied on hooking through EA/Ubi/EGS/etc's system, so you don't need to reverse engineer THAT shit as well), documentation of the opcodes necessary to function, and any backend server shit that is relevant to the game (AI routines, navmeshes, etc).

None of that would require them to expose any middleware they may not have the licenses for redistributing, but it's also asking a lot for them to teardown any reliance on their publisher's platform.
