>Square could've rode on the overwhelming success of Chrono Trigger
>Call it Chrono Trigger 2 and slap a whole lot of references to excite bing bing wahoeers worldwide
>Huge financial success would've been a mathematical certainty
>Instead just fucking releases an off-off-off-spinoff from a JP only Satellaview dev's "it came to me in a dream" schizo headcanon VN that had reached maybe 80 people worldwide
>Result is still sovlful
Modern companies, including Squeenix themselves would never do that nowdays.

Honestly it's wild how much of a beautiful accident Chrono Cross ended up being. Like they took the most leftfield, "no one asked for this" approach and somehow it came out dripping with sovl. All those alternate realities, the dreamlike soundtrack, the weird-ass battle system-it shouldn’t have worked, but it absolutely did.

Modern Squeenix would've just tossed a focus-tested Chrono Trigger 2 with 4K Luminaire cutscenes and frog DLC. Back then it was like they handed a dream journal and a bottle of shochu to Masato Kato and said "go nuts." And he did.

God-tier lunacy.

>beautiful accident
It's an absolutely terrible game with one of the earliest examples of atrocious nu-localization, where translator Richard Honeywood made every character speak with a different "wacky comedy" accent.

I didn't much care for the localization desu. The game was just so incoherent on a fundamental level that it felt like a minor thing
>Here's your sweet childhood gf you start with
