I usually avoid serpents by skirting the edges of those screens unless I'm looking for oddities or crafting bits, the waterways got a bit more interesting with updates/random encounters/that one dungeon but I mean yeah. It's just water. Not the most exciting shit unless you really like jetskis and the idea of sailing around.
