I don't give a shit about esports, but for whatever reason they're the only fps I've ever been decent at.

Real reason though, it's because there's no "characters". Most players don't give a shit, but it's the 10% of autists who laser in on some gay character with a generic sad back story, and make it their entire personality, complete with the need to tell everyone about it. Epic tried to add 'heroes' to quake but they weren't likeable enough for the aforementioned autists to self-insert as.

Market landscape is completely different, even compared to just 4 years ago. All the biggest shooters are now essentially self-contained platforms with hundred of thousands of people that invested years worth of time into them to move on to something new.

The GaaS goldrush is over. People have less patience for half-finished early access f2p games. If a game doesn't launch with a full suite, PvP, PvE, sizable amount of content to grind for out the gate, it won't retain players for long.

Apex and other BR are literally arena shooters albeit couched in the horrible CoD sprint to ironsights playstyle. Old brands just weren't leading the expansion of the genre and for that they disappeared. Nobody wants 5v5 quake 3 and I still think it's really stupid that this has remained a topic of argument because quake was originally known for its campaigns. IMO it's small team sizes and score driven deathmatch that have become defunct game design. As far as arena game design people want 8v8+ or 30+ player FFA modes centered around objectives and items.

Tactical objective modes are sorely underutilized so this is why CS or Siege have no real competition. New FPS projects should explore tactical objective gameplay direction if they can't develop a full campaign or provide GaaS online content. Then again nothing matters if your game is unpolished with bad gun recoil animations etc.

The skill ceiling is too high for casuals to play, what happens is that the obsessive pro players completely dog on the newfags and that leave less than 30 active players at most trying to outjerk each other.
