Nintendo should've never allowed RARE to leave
RARE was the one developer keeping the N64 from total irrelevance. You think garbage like Yoshi's Story was doing it? Fuck no (which, btw, Perfect Dark sold more copies than it)

Reminder that Goldeneye outsold literally every Gaycube game at over 8 million copies.

>B-b-but

They would've made Diddy Kong Racing 2 for the GC and it would've sold a ton and I have no doubt it would've been better than Double Trash.

A lot of people also left id between games. What's your point? Unless they also took the technology, they could've done a sequel. While PDZ has a terrible story, it still has decent technology under the hood, especially the multiplayer bots

People matter
You can give some random team the tech EPD uses to make Zelda games and that still wouldn't guarantee them making a good game period

Most of Rare staff left before Microsoft purchased them. Considering that many of Rare's Xbox titles started development for the GameCube, I doubt Rare would of lived up to their N64 days if they stayed with Nintendo. The talent had dried up.

Well I have played Timesplitters 2 and I really don't like it. The time gimmick feels like a way to jingle keys at the player "ooooh look a new era" and justifies possibly using assets from cancelled games.

Darkwatch, IMO, mogs Timesplitters -- coop and all.

You put a picture of GE but all the people who made that left in 1999 as you know, and PD was sticky taped together by nu hires and sold 2M to GE's 8 and then the games they made after that sucked and didn't even sell a million so your whole argument is retarded

The fact that all of these developers fell off the face of the earth in the mid 90s and only half of them recovered doesnt mean that this isnt a list that includes every western titan of the era, outside of shit like maxis (but even then they have the people who port maxis games)

Rare were falling off towards the end of the N64 and Nintendo could see the writing on the wall, that's why they were let go. the absolute flops that were Kameo and Grabbed by the Ghoulies (both of which were originally being developed for the GCN) proved them right.

Nintendo had no say in the matter. They only owned 49% of Rare. The Stamper brothers wanted a big payout, and Nintendo didn't have the power to stop the sale.

Nintendo and Rare had been butting heads for a while. Jet Force Gemini, Perfect Dark and Conker were self-published by Rare, and Rare successfully fought for more control over their projects. (Even Diddy Kong Racing was self-published!) Nintendo was losing their influence over Rare, and they weren't fond of this arrangement.

I'm not convinced that Nintendo would have stopped Rare from leaving even if they could. The relationship was souring, and they got a huge ROI from the sale.

Yeah MS paid nearly $400m for Rare. So Nintendo would have got about $200m for their shares. Then Nintendo bought Retro Studios for $1m.

Nintendo got Retro Studios for 0.5% of what they got for selling their stake in rare.

Ts2 was way clunkier than either and had worse damage modelling/hit reactions. More of a bullet sponge game with crappy weapons. The bots and party game modes (infection) give it an edge but as an fps its like a 3/10 to PDs 10/10

Thank you. I think it gets way too obtuse compared to PD, which I already think was pushing it with some objectives. Plus I don't see the appeal of the time travel gimmick.

Goldeneye was great for two reasons:
>the dev team was all inexperienced in game development and were just making something they thought was cool
>the level design was unique for a FPS they meant it to be a Time Crisis clone before someone suggested just giving the player the ability to move on their own
they never sat down and tried to make a great FPS game, it just kinda morphed into an FPS when all their ideas began to synergize together mid-development (shocking both Nintendo and the Bond license holders).

Rare fell off hard by the time we got Star Fox Adventures but even discounting that turd of a game you still had the actual garbage on the GBA and even DK64 which was a very mediocre product propped up by n64 diehards
Anonymous No.714474221 [Report]

One more note: If you play Goldeneye today, most levels have sections where you are relatively safe from gunfire but enemies will group in front of you to try to kill you. These are likely the points during development where they would stop Bond for the Time Crisis shooting segment parts they planned.

Funny to hear that, because as a kid, I used Goldeneye to emulate Time crisis at home, hiding behind crates to reload and coming up to deal with enemies before moving ahead a segment, and it just worked.

Problem boils down to Microsoft and the American legal system for allowing them to just get away with anything they want and maintain a monopoly whilst providing subpar products and services. They can just offer so much money to buy anything that no sane person could refuse, and when they own it it inevitably ends up turning to shit under their management. Hopefully Steam OS takes a bite out of them when it comes time to upgrade from Win 10.

tbf Sony did the same shit. Buying companies so that the competition can't have them can just win you. When they entered the gaming industry Sony bought Pygnosis (Studio Liverpool who Sony now shut down), who were the biggest European publisher at the time with like 50% marketshare and it utterly crippled Nintendo and SEGA in that region.
