But games have said for decades on them that you're buying a licence, not the actual code... They've explicitly claimed to be licences this whole time. You're free to do whatever with the disc and box if you bought one, but ownership of the software hasn't been guaranteed in any way and has been explicitly mentioned as only being a licence. Now imagine companies coming into your house, with no prior warning, and taking that disc away, telling you "we decided we're not profiting from this game anymore and will no longer support it, so you don't get to play it anymore, no refunds by the way" and there's nothing you can do about it.

You can do an offline mode easily for some smaller live service games. It's the bigger more complicated ones you'll likely have a trouble doing it with like an MMO. People who think that's just a simple server fix really show how little or no game developing experience they have.
