The switch 1 had a ton of games like Smash bro's and MK8 that were kind of a definitive version of that franchise in its classic form. With full back compat and the eshop, they want the new games in the series to be different, not replacing the last game, so that they can still charge full price for 8 so new switch 2 buyers might still want to buy that old game for a full price-ish.
MKW is a different type of MK game. Dont like the intermissions? Play 8. The update proofs that. Dont turn MKW into 8, play 8 if you want that. All those youtubers acting smug saying they're playing 8 again like its some kind of middlefinger are doing what nintendo wants them to do.
I think thats also why the new open world platformer is now Donkey kong. Mario is still a valid product to buy today, so why replace it this soon into the gen.
Old users get free upgrades/more content for the games they own, new people to the ecosystem have a near decade of exclusives to buy into.
So long answer short: MKW is great but it doenst replace 8. The angry mob just wants to play 8. 8 has so many fucking tracks build over a decade, how would nintendo directly compete with itself? 100 tracks? Thats not doable with their style. So they didnt compete with themselfs.
