Kana mode uniroinically filters japaneselets because they lack the vocabulary to know what's "words" vs "grammar" vs "particles" and and up worse off despite the writing being simpler.

It's amazing, because several other games would offer multiple ways to deal with this problem. Dark Dawn probably did it the best by letting you toggle it on and off while still allowing you to tap any word you couldn't read to verify. And it's not like Pokemon's text boxes didn't have enough room to squeeze in some 5px or 6px high kana between the lines.
