Hex grids are great for TTRPGS, if you're on the computer you can do better than the hex grid by not using a grid at all, so it loses its advantage over square.

speaking of computers, i do recall renowned explorers having a pretty neat system with arbitrary tile adjacency
granted, the system is pretty simple and doesn't even have charge read: charge an enemy in a line moves

Square. Whenever I'm interested in a game but see hexagons I just mentally filter out the game. Square grid means fun tactics gameplay like FFT and Tactics Ogre, hexagon grid is for boring map painters or deckbuilding crap.

Square, but human units occupy a 3x3 grid space, allowing for more nuanced movements and to facilitate a partial line-of-sight system. Other objects and creatures may occupy more or fewer squares.

Knowing whether or not you're in cover is actually pretty easy. If you want baby mode, then the developer can cast out the detection zone like pic related.
but personally, I believe that if you make the player have to eye it on their own, then it creates natural layer of randomness. As the player might make a mistake and think they're in cover when they're not.

Why? The benefit of a tile map is that it makes visual estimation of distance easy.
This is a computer game.

Hexagonal is more fluid, squares is more rigid.
On squares you've got diagonals, on hexs you've got neighbours.

Legitimately no reason to use squares unless you don't know how to map the coordinates for a hexagonal grid.

Squares don't make sense if you want to implement diagonal movement.
You're always moving "faster" in some directions with squares. This is only acceptable in games where movement is irrelevant, such as the overworld in Pokemon games where you're out of combat.

hex gives single units too much adjacency
also makes aoe shit like spells/auras really difficult to scale because youre forced to do it radially outward at an absurd rate (1 -> 7 -> 19) or just abandon grid alignment entirely, whereas standard squares have all sizes of rectangles to work with
i really like these kind of hypothetical design discussions
