I'm having trouble with this puzzle because I'm not sure what words they want in the blanks.

The scenario is her mother got trapped under furniture in a house fire. There's lots of ways to fill in the blanks to say that though.

She watched her die.
She killed her mom.
She killed her mother. (The game might be pedantic enough to only accept mother and not mom)
She betrayed her mom.
She murdered her parent.
She saw her burn.

I mean, some of those are wrong, because if you ran away, then you didn't watch her die. I tried "she left her behind" but that didn't work either.

The brackets might be significant? I mean they must not be there for no reason. But sentences don't generally have brackets in them if the sentence is so short.

She ignored her mother didn't work either. What could it be? Anyway, this is spoilers but you don't know what game I am playing so hopefully it doesn't matter.

"She abandoned her mother"? How do you input the words? What's the context of this?

It's a pretty free-form game. I suppose it compares to old Sierra text parser games where you essentially have to put in the correct phrase exactly or nothing happens, but there are also multiple characters I can speak to, so you have to get the right person and the right letter arrangement it's not phoenix wright where there are a pretty limited set of options that you can eventually narrow down over time.

But actually, how Sierra games worked was they matched keywords. I probably just need to get the two correct words in the input line, so I might be able to just type "watched die" and it will accept it, for example. It does depend how the game was programmed though.

Rather than brackets, if you look closely the 'brackets' are actually flush with the underline. Like it's not brackets, it's a tub or some kind of container. It's definitely a clue but I can't guess beyond that without more context.

I think this is the first one that is more than a one word answer, which is probably causing all the trouble.

Game is a big dialogue tree, essentially. You have to figure out keywords. single words are pretty easy. If you suspect a fire happened, you can type in the word "fire" and dialogue options will appear.

People seem to be heavily focusing on the notion I should use the words "left behind" because those are the words used in the hint dialogue. But would the developers really do that? It'd be too simple. How else could I describe that scenario? I want to say the same thing, but with different words...

I was trying various permutations of left behind, such as "Sofia left her behind" or "Isabella left her behind" or "Sofia let her die". Eventually I realized that I hadn't tried a permutation without any proper nouns at all. I thought the game wanted me to specify which personality of the multiple personalities was responsible for leaving her behind. You literally just have to put in "left behind" instead of typing the whole sentence. and I guess the brackets were just a red herring or some stupid shit like that. The brackets make even less sense than they did before now that I got it right

It is actually kind of funny that the title only makes sense on the presumption you are going to get it wrong on your first go around.

By executing a person who didn't do it, I exchanged her life for something that wasn't even true. Or lies. Whatever. It sort of became obvious that it's probably not even solvable on one playthrough because of the time limit. I'll try again sometime on new game plus. When I calm down from the kind of bullshit puzzles.

Okay I beat the game (true ending). I'll play it a bit more but it's like 4 hours which is not a fantastic match for the price.
That said it's good. The process of uncovering her backstory is nice, and the story's a pretty good one. Pretty much every puzzle is bullshit but I ended up getting them all without guidance so they can't be that bad. And there's a cute waifu-raising aspect to the game, with giving gifts, moving the camera around, and her occasionally starting a conversation with you if you're not doing anything else. Olivia best girl btw.
But I do wish the personalities got a little more interconnected than just a cross shape with Sofia in the middle. You have to use Olivia to get Isabelle's pendant at the start but that's the first and last time two non-Sofias interact. There's also how the very first puzzle requires google but it's the only one that does, which is weird.

All in all I would rate the game 8/10 if you get it for free.

I am very angry I didn't notice the initials of their first names formed the acronym sofia. I've been angry about that ever since I didn't figure it out in the movie The Last of Shelia.

I did pick up on the hidden wordplay in Lunar Eclipse, though. Hopefully it means something and isn't just a coincidence.
