Was RE4 actually scary during a first playthrough?

Some parts, yes.
It's still an action-horror overall.

I remember playing it alongside my friend together on the phone and us both playing with the lights on during that fucking invisible bug part.

At times it was spooky, other times it was action or just fun exploration. RE4 was (is) the perfect mix of all of these things. They haven't hit that sweet spot since. The regeneradors in particular were creepy.

At times, but quickly deflated by the fact that all the spookiness can be taken care of with enough lead.

I remember loaning it from a friend and becoming too scared to complete it. When I returned it I lied and said the tank controls were too uncomfortable for me to continue playing it.

Came here to post this. The creepiest parst were definitely the regenerators. I liked the whole rotten island, even the weird shit like the hanging meat sacks that would violently twitch and wiggle around.

Maybe if you're 8 years old and don't see how it's inherently not scary when you can suplex the enemy.

as a 12 y/o yeah the regeneradors in the first encounter spooked me.
as an adult the regeneradors in the first encounter spooked me again in the remake

the ashley segments still stress me out, idk if i'd call it scary but it's certainly tense.

No. What's scary about horror Resident Evil games is that you feel vulnerable due to the lack of resources. In RE4, enemies drop bullets.

Dr Salvatore and the chainsaw sisters still make my anus pucker every time you hear them starting those scrub cutters up. RE5 tried to do something with the double chainsaw wielding crackhead but since it cuts to black or doesn't lop off the head it's nowhere near as scary. It's the brief struggle that sells it because it looks like Leon is about the break free only to get murked because fuck you that's why. The other one is the oversized grasshopper that goes full Fly on your ass by melting half of your face off from one too many hugs.

I was 14 when this game came out in 2005. It was kinda creepy until this part, and then it was genuinely terrifying.

It wasn't scary but it had enough spooky atmosphere for me to give it a pass

It was simultaneously the first horror game I played and when I truly started to take serious attention to mainstream gaming (before it was emulators and random 64 presents).

RE4 intro was so fucking good I had to stop right after the bell toll and take a break I was so spooked (first attempt popped my cherry with the chainsaw decapitation).

The mixed emotions of wanting to continue so badly but having to stop every typewriter because it made me shit my pants has never occurred since.

I personally found it quite scary the first play and I've played lots of horror games, but once you have a good grasp of the mechanics it's more just fun than anything else

No. Simply because any average gamer will notice the invincibility frames during certain actions which you can then abuse. Like what's the point of getting chased by a chainsaw guy if ladders and hopping over fences allow you safe space?

No. There was one jumpscare that startled me when that guy burst out of a refrigerator in flames towards Leon. Other than that there was nothing scary about this.

The atmosphere was great. It was tense and scary at times but Leon being a funny little fuck was great way to make you relax for a moment. Dunno If It was intended but the mood whiplash worked great. I feel like RE4make is treating Itself too seriously and since you're being treated with tense and scary at 100% uptime, you kind grow numb to It.
But that's just me, I think

Eh its more tense than scary, it comes more from the feeling of being outnumbered than the monsters and ganados being scary

Yeah.
>the constant worry that you'll have enough ammo for any situation
>the panic that sets in when you realize you're completely surrounded
>the relief that comes when you solve a situation through repeated good decisions
>the "EAT LEAD, MOTHERFUCKER" I pulled against the Verdugo
>the eerie atmosphere of the castle
>the regenerator section (hearing that fucking breathing still sets me off)
>when the game's director decides you've had too much fun and throws you a curveball
It's ups and downs in the most balanced and fun way possible. You feel like a goddamn hero but also a scared little kid. Most fun I've ever had with a horror game, even though I don't usually play horror.
