>30 seconds long
Yes, that's a good thing, because levels come as a set. You beat 3-4 levels plus a fortress with no game overs and your progress is locked in. SMW ruined everything by changing this, making levels much bigger and longer because you can just beat one at a time and then save the game, making lives and game overs irrelevant.

2D Mario went downhill after 3.

The levels are fun and the power ups are cool and it's full of creative ideas.

World > 3 > Land 2 > Wonder >>>>> The NSMBs, fuck I hate those games so much fucking garbage. "Guys guess what! Our game's new feature is one of many things we already did 20 years ago but we made it lame and shitty so you don't have fun!" Fuck anyone who pretends the DS one is good either that game sucks too it's not better just because Petey Piranha is there, the level design is shit and it's just a worse Mario World/Mario 3 rehash

As far as Mario on the NES goes anyone else think Mario 2 USA had the best bosses? The mechanic of grabbing and throwing objects led to a neat variety whenever you were not fighting Birdo.

Mario Bros and Mario Bros 3 the bosses are essentially the same shit. And sadly Super Mario World did not improve anything. Neither did Mario 64. Bosses for Mario didn't start becoming by standard unique until Sunshine.

The levels are dense and designed really well. World has better physics but the levels are so much worse it's not even close.

Every good idea Nintendo has ever had for 2D Mario was already featured in SMB3. None of the later games have a reason to exist.

One in every 20 levels is, maybe. Most of it is either just unfun or a regression from World + a rehashed or annoying gimmick. The Blue Shell is fun though I guess. It's the least bad of them but it's still very dull compared to the actual games.

Level design was forgettable, powerups were good tho and I wish we could get mini mushroom and blue shell in other iterations. NSMBWii tho.. that one can sit with the OG series.

i liked it but it kinda is repetitive to play through for me. I’ve been able to replay world and the original more than it. I never got the hate for the Nsmb though I liked wii’s 4 player coop.

>Zelda 2
nah
>Megaman 1
LOL, hell no. Janky as fuck compared to SMB3
>Megaman 2
possibly

But none of these games matched the gamefeel of SMB3.
Not a single one.
Itd be like saying Wolfenstein 3D felt better to control than DOOM (1993)
Arguably they havent gotten Mario to feel like he did in SMB3 since. (SMBW was more about precision and abandoned the momentum of SMB3)

Id argue not in the same way if you're referring to the Rare games.
Country made chaining rolls more of a requirement to schmoove through the game at around a similar speed as Mario did in SMB 3.
And DK didnt have powerups in both the Rare and Retro like SMB3 did.
Id argue that Retro channeled SMB 3 a bit more as DK is less precise in their games, with a greater focus on momentum thanks to the extra screen real-estate they got on the Wii/Wii U and Switch compared to Rare.

I dunno it has kino music, fun powerups, varied gameworlds, cute artstyle and challenging gameplay. Plus there's secret areas to discover, adding longevity. Name a better platformer on NES except other Mario games and Megaman, you can't. Even today it holds up.

>when can small mario specifically, unlock new areas?
Small Mario has always been able to fit in tunnels the others couldn't without some kind of wall clip.

That just leaves Star-ier Mario, a brainless temporary powerup that lets players stomp all over the level design so they won't notice how fucking boring it is

7/4/2025, 8:14:35 PM No.714507314
if you play world and then 3 back to back youll notice that 3 is decently harder and shorter and therefore it is less boring. mario begins pivoting towards casualization/mass appeal with world. at the time of making smb3, the wind was still blowing in the 'hard is good' direction, but by world, it was blowing the other way.

2d mario peaked with smb3. and if you ask for which 3d mario is the best, the answer is 64.

That's like 90th percentile of nuance for Mario powerups. As for the blue shell, it's fast, and fast = fun

Agreed I feel like in '88 they still thought that Hard meant Good, I'm not sure when that switched but it makes a lot of sense, at some point gamers started acting like entitled babies and the industry just caved in & gave them easy games I guess. All the legendary video games are hard as fuck.

This is like saying the key from SMB2 is a good powerup.

Though I honestly don't hate Shell Mario. I don't think it's interesting because portable shells were a thing since SMB3, but it's functional. If it were a common Fire Flower replacement similar to the Leaf/Feather it might have made that piece of shit game more interesting

Having to beat a boss on hard mode (even if we're talking NSMB) to unlock additional content is fun to me. Good risk-reward design. A key you can drop any time to pick a turnip or whatever is not the same as a power downgrade that leaves you one hit from death.

Not a NSMB fan btw, just willing to recognize rhe memorable elements. Haven't played the game since I beat it 20 years ago.

If you're talking about Japan, FF3 and DQ3 weren't options in '88. If you're talking about the US, FF and DQ weren't options in '88 period.
