FF1 on GBA emulator is really solid, even if it's simple and somewhat dated. Being able to fastforward through the mook fights helps the pacing a ton, but the game's structure is timeless. The postgame dungeons the GBA added are also great, and sadly not on the steam release to my understanding.

7 is a classic but overly lauded, 8 is a classic if you played it when you're 12, 10 is doing shit, 13 is better than people say but not good (though allegedly the sequels are solid), and some freaks go to bat for 16 but they aren't real

I can't exactly recall when or why I added Gnosia to my wishlist years ago, but I finally bought it. Single-player Amogus premise is fun, but the amount of story content is way too light in comparison to the repetitive grind of the actual stat-based gameplay, with the main story meta-progression being gated behind short but mandatory RNG events with hidden requirements and no in-game clues. The appeal of the main gameplay loop wears off long before you get anywhere near the end.

Kind of wish this was just a regular flowchart-based VN / puzzle game akin to Zero Escape and the like.

The original was pretty neat. It isn't 10/10 obviously, but they do interesting stuff with the gameplay progression and intertwine it into the storytelling. It makes the simple plot a lot more engaging because it feels like you're going through it with the characters so to speak.
Also it knows how to use lighting and colours/contrast in the older version, so I imagine the new one will look really good.

I don't mind losing in the game part, especially since the game part is largely meaningless in the grand scheme of things and I'm pretty sure you also have to lose under certain specific conditions in order to unlock scene.s Sometimes you do get more clear direct objectives like "ally with X person and protect them until the end" but often times you're just shooting in the dark hoping that the game gives you a new event. And even if you do know what to do in those cases, sometimes the RNG just decides to fuck you over by either deleting you or the person you're supposed to be protecting, or you rolled with starting reputation that doesn't let you ally with the person you're supposed to be protecting, forcing another restart.

I think a way of fixing the dull repetition would've been for the devs to add a more direct way for player to force event starting conditions, or just making the hint system explicit so you know the exact conditions the game wants you to fulfill.

Yeah the performance is still atrocious. Worst thing is it doesn’t even look that good. The only person I would recommend buying it is a pre-existing fan of journey to the west, because (so I’ve been told) the game is sort of a sequel and fully expects you to know the story and the characters. I have the most general knowledge of the story and I’ve heard of a few of the characters and I was completely lost the entire time. It is very much a Chinese game made for Chinese by Chinese, and since journey to the west is the only interesting piece of literature the country has ever produced everyone in the country has read it. It doesn’t make it unplayable because it’s not like other souls games haven’t made a story difficult to understand or even see, but there are a LOT of cutscenes where nothing is explained because you’re supposed to know it.
I mean I think after the DLC Lies of P is the best souls game anyone has made including From, but if you didn’t like the demo then you shouldn’t get it.
Yeah for $20 I think it’s worth trying LotF. It’s not the best game and it’s still got plenty of eurojank but it’s fun and the umbral mechanic is at least executed competently. I played it at launch and enjoyed it despite the issues until I got to the end and realized that what I thought was the point of no return was not in fact the point of no return and I had silently locked myself out of every other ending hours before simply by entering the “wrong” area despite not actually having done anything that should lorewise or gameplaywise have locked me out. I was so pissed off I haven’t touched it since.

I liked it, but it ironically does not have a lot of depth to its mechanics. The gameplay loop of 'diving / restaurant management / upgrade gear' is serviceable, but the main story quest becomes a bit of a slog about halfway through.

I'll say the cutscenes that play when characters taste your special dishes are really damn charming, and I mostly powered through the main quest line to see those specifically.

Traversal between rooms causing stutter is still a thing on the PC dead space remake port since motive abandoned support for it, but it's not PC specific. It's actually game engine specific. So if you think the experience will be better on console you'll still get traversal stutter regardless, i don't know who told you this wasn't an issue on PS5 but they're wrong.

Keplerth was OK. I don't know how much they improved it after release but it suffered a lot from "here's zone 1, with tier 1 equipment, and tier 1 enemies. now here's zone 2 with tier 2 equipment and tier 2 enemies". It's like a 3 hour game repeated 10 times.

Aye, that's still the same, to be honest. The most interesting relatively recent improvement is they added passives to every weapon in the game and made it possible to upgrade any weapon to max tier, thus opening up a decent bit of theorycrafting potential, which was always the game's strongest suit thanks to the gene system. My favorite meme build is the one where I made a character that has insane evasion and dies in 2 hits which I remedied by using a shield accessory that has 3 charges and pops regardless of the amount of damage done, serving as solid protection from oneshots when an evade doesn't proc. It tends to recharge before I fail another evade roll. Then I had no space whatsoever for DPS genes so I used a goblin spear that has a chance to deal 30% of a regular enemy's max health or 2% of a boss's max health worth of damage and pumped as much attack speed into the build as I could fit to maximize the number of procs. It was an amusing setup.

Maybe try Voidspire Tactics if you don't wanna risk a tenner on Horizon. Voidspire is much much more basic since it's the first game by the dev, but it should give you a loose idea on what the general vibe of his games is like.
