It's bland, boring, and ugly. Dragon Quest only survives because of Japanese boomers and Mexicans. It's one of those series they have to pretend to like just because they're expected to like it. Like the Beatles are for music. It's just fake prestige.

>>714510678 (OP) I don't have a horse in this race but the last DQ-related game came out in 2017. I had to Google this, because I thought the franchise released its last "new" game two decades ago or something. Meanwhile, I have a basic grasp of where the other franchises stand. I'll also say that I think Toriyama's art style doesn't have as much broad-spectrum appeal anymore.

>>714510678 (OP) >Using Steam charts as metric for decade old JRPGs that didn't release on steam until years later Steamdrones are deranged. >I-i'm just using it as a metric for comparison! Then post sales.
>>714511547 >>Using Steam charts as metric for decade old JRPGs that didn't release on steam until years later Actually, the DQ game there is one of the only ones on the list to release day and date on steam with its original release, in addition to being the newest game on there (ignoring Rebirth's steam release).
DQ is actually a bad game honestly. It sells because of Akira Toriyama’s stylings. That’s really it. I have tried playing multiple entries and get so bored I quit every single time
>>714512338 Are you going to respond to the numbers or not? DQ3 HD is a remake of an NES game that sold 2 million copies in 3 weeks, that's a lot better than several of the games you're comparing it to.
>>714513083 Has no legs is the issue. It sold 2 million in a month (which is slow compared to the last numbered release) and has already faded into obscurity, whereas Persona 4, a port of a remaster from over a decade ago, which itself is based on a game from nearly 20 years ago, has almost 1000 more players than it. That's not a good sign.

The problem is that the west was mostly exposed to games build on its foundation, so it looks generic in comparison because people are used to dragon quest + whatever gimmicks a series build ontop. It's the pizza margherita or vanilla icecream of JRPGs.
