Self-inserting is about personality, not looks. People don't self insert as characters that look like them, they self-insert as characters with personalities that are similar to their own. Or as blank slates.

i find both to be really strange. especially if you are playing an RPG. isn't the whole point for you to roleplay as someone else? crafting your own character thats divorced from you? when i play a tribal jungle troll in world of warcraft, that is about as opposite of me as possible, yet i still enjoy my character (back when i played this shit game, that is). idk why this is so hard for people to do.

i would not say so at all. i find Raskolnikov to be a well written and interesting character, though i do not share in his ideals nor does my life experience match his in any way. same goes for the three brothers karamazov. i like all three characters, yet they are all different from one another and from me. there is always a percent or two of aspects of characters that you might be able to see yourself in, but thats just normal human empathy and relatability on a baseline level. im a scandinavian and have nothing in common nor do i share in the ideals of a cannibalistic, mystical jungle troll
