i honestly think it boiled down to a lack of content, the accels/drags/animation fuckery wasn't too bad to deal with in the casual modes, since you could gang up on the small amount of tryhards in each lobby
but once you unlocked enough gear and got bored of the maps, what else was there to do?
i got ~300 hours out of mordhau and was satisfied with my experience

I enjoyed Mordhau for a while, but high level combat was too focused on janky animation manipulating garbage. Eventually I decided that the game was making me angry more than happy and stopped playing.

Pretty much this. Pandering to sweatlords, the game warps away from its original idea to be balanced around janky and unintended mechanics and autistic faggotry, eventually you lose the bulk of your community who just wanted to have cool knight battles, and the sweats who are left never liked the game to begin with, they just liked the dopamine rush from dunking on people not willing to engage with jank, so once those are gone and they're stuck with sweats like themselves, they'll leave as well.

Those games never needed to be more than arcadey knight battle games with juuust enough depth and tech to allow for skill expression, and they way overshot the mark.

I personally had a lot of problems with the game's depth perception, but that was probably because I played in 90 FoV. Anything less than that makes my eyes hurt.

all this. the devs listened to the wrong people. a very small, very loud, very autistic section of the playerbase with an aberrant idea of whats fun ended up telling the devs what makes the game fun instead of leveraging the setting and the chaos of large battles to create fun emergent gameplay

imagine an FPS game where instead of shooting people with guns being the focus of the gameplay it was bhopping backwards into enemies which caused them to die. thats what happened to this genre

Yeah I remember finding out the meta was to turn your screen to the left so you hit people before even visually swinging your sword, and that the devs weren't going to fix it because they liked it that way, and never went back. Cared too much about nebulous competitive relevance and not enough about actually making a fun, balanced medieval warfare game.

I've been playing Chiv 2 daily and started less than a year ago and it's really fun. There's plenty of new players and the 64 man mode is always active and full most of the time.

you could say any of this about any game or genre where 2 or more players compete against each other. but a lot of other games whether theyre counter strike, rocket league, street fighter, dota2 remain popular and have massive player bases with healthy numbers of noobs joining regularly.now i believe, and people in this thread seem to be in agreement that the reason that these so called "slashers" die off and havent had a breakthrough hit game or franchise yet is that the high level gameplay is nonsense, to put it into one word.

you pick up an FPS because you want a game where you have gunfights, and where skill at aiming is the factor that separates skilled players from new players at least in the mechanical sense. you can imagine by looking at utter noobs what the game must look like at the highest levels: better aim, better coordination, better tactics etc. the same is not true of slashers. its a completely different game and different set of "skills" at the highest level. it looks like a different game and mockery of the thing its supposed to simulate

i dont think condensing it to "cry baby shitters cant hang with the pros" really covers it

Early fh was so retardedly broken people actually needed quite a lot of time to figure out what was broken, answer was everything obviously
Only thing that was saving it for some time is that it is the only game in it's genre, nothing plays like it
CCU update today is mostly 80/20 on positive reception, in hindsight making light parries as easy as they were is very fucking stupid, considering the punish on some characters could go over 100hp
It made berserker extremely obnoxious though
But now it's indeed the opposite extreme where every character must have bash opener, roll catcher and 50/50 mix up, or else it is total garbage
Almost all new characters have some stupid annoying move that stun you for two seconds and deal a shit ton of damage, and it must be unblockable, as if optimal ganking doesn't suck out all the fun from the game as is.
Making optimal ganking casual is so ridiculous, it's not like every player is a youtuber with 5000+ hrs and can win 1v4s consistently
It mostly feels like a dichotomy instenad of spectrum where one side of players are mouthbreathing retards who will feed revenge and other side are sweats that will 100 to 0 you without you physically being able to do anything about it, no in between

Mordhau is really good, it just needed more competent maps. For the first year it only had like 4 non-ffa maps.
Even if the skill ceiling is insanely high, if there's gorgeous, fun maps with obstacles you can fuck around with then everyone including casuals has a good time. The devs are just shitty map makers + took way too long making the ones they made and half of them aren't good.
