I really don't get that whole initiative.
> This game with 0 players left i bought 20 years ago should actually KEEP ITS SERVERS OPENS and STILL KEEP GETTING UPDATES!

Do these retards just want the underpaid overworked game developers to slave away forever on a game they want to move on from?

I'd bet $99999999 trillion dollars that everyone who supports Stop Killing Games laughed at Concord failing.
The stupid thing that inspired the whole stop killing games was an irrelevant garbage dead old car game but Concord, a new release lots of people worked in that closed within a day didn't get not even an inch of push back.

Why do gamers out of all groups defend corporations so adamantly? It's on the level of nationalism at this point, people jumping in front of Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft and Valve/Ubisoft/Activision to block all regulations. Hell, just criticize game for it's mtx/battlepass/lootboxes/gacha stuff and you get gamers become genuinely angry and hostile.

Like does this happen with other industries and their consumers? Like some paid movies being taken away and the movie watchers getting angry and making fun of people who demand that studios and distributors shouldn't do that? Is it just vidya culture that has corporation/shareholder worship as cornerstore of gamer identity?

video games have objectively been in a rapid downward spiral for at least 6 years now, more so than we may have believed in years past. We're at the point where the vast majority of games released in the past decade or so by major studios will be rendered unplayable, once they decide to arbitrarily shut down the servers. Servers of which most of the time were never necessary due to no multiplayer features anyway. Not to mention older, much more beloved video games could be reaching the end of their life cycle soon as well. We'll be largely left with nothing but the most modern slop possible if we don't do anything about this. Video game companies don't exactly deserve your sympathy anyway, as they just shit out garbage and try to milk your wallet as much as possible.

Nobody asks for infinite servers or updates. The ask is an end of life plan. That can range from
- an offline mode retaining core features
- giving players tools to host their own servers / P2P
- planning the exact server shutdown in advance and putting that info on the box (like an actual rental or subscription).
Since this is hard to retrofit, it would only apply to future games, which you don't care about anyway.

Yeah I have no idea why gamers are the most susceptible to it, considering one of the well renowned games programmers who made the PC be able to do scrolling platformers like the NES broke into his school with thermite to steal an Apple II. The thing is none of these practices would survive if people weren't paying for them.
Regulations and retarded bureaucracy only affect the smaller end of the chain, those mega corporations you hate so much don't care either way as they have an entire branch of wagies just to deal with any legal/bureaucracy bs the government wants them to, the small guy is always the one on the losing end, this is what magatards fail to realize and what makes people seethe I assume.

Unfortunately, people are retards. Free market theory assumes rational actors that pay for the better, more efficient product which is not the case.
>smaller end of the chain
Problem is, I can't think of many smaller games that rely purely on a centralized service (They either have server tools, P2P or other bespoke ad-hoc methods) so this side of things wouldn't affect them nearly as much.

You seem to both misunderstand and participate in doomerism.
It's considered "normal" for corpos to use government to further their interest, but when normal people and consumers tries to use government regulations and initiatives there is a huge pushback insisting it's wrong and pointless to try and change stuff and against free market etc.
Kinda fucked up isn't it? That it's the reflexive reply for so many gamers.

Technically "they" started regulating first by banning piracy.

And yes, its a completely made up government limitation. You do not have a magic right in the universe for your product not to be easily copied so it is (artificially) more valuable. Why would you?

By all means, let's have -zero- regultations like so (and no, I am not doing the anarcholibertarian thing. One could not have copyrights but still have forbidding murder etc) and I'd have no problem with it.

literally all you have to do is put the server side source code on github under a GPL license and patch the game to let the user pick what server they're using, assuming they can't already via some hidden config setting or something
that is less that zero effort, at best one or two lines of code unless the developers wrote abysmally retarded code or are complete idiots relying heavily on dogshit proprietary middleware to write a server
you don't even have to provide binaries

users would still have to pay for the game to get the game client + assets and the GPL license would largely hamstring competitors using a studio's code for their benefit
hell it doesn't even need to be an open source license, it could just be source available like aseprite, space engineers, unreal, and i think even tf2

literally no excuse other than self importance and arrogance and vain protectionism over what is almost certainly amateurish utterly worthless shitcode not worth paying for had it not been part of a game

But I know millenials who aren't into vidya and they don't have same kind of kneejerk "NOOO DON'T CRITICIZE CORPOS OR SUPPORT REGULATIONS YOU... YOU FUCKING COMMIE!!!" Like gamers do. Like when the shitty live action Mulan got accusations of using the Ughyr or whatever slave labor, you didn't get Disney fans jumping to defend Disney.
But when game publishers and suits slap the most obnoxious mtx and uses crunch culture on top squeezing their workers to the point of mental breakdown before firing them, gamers jumps in to blame the devs instead.
It's just gaming subculture thing. Same with piracy. Someone emulates games? The fucking screaming and defending or corpos. Someone pirates a new game? Same thing but twice as loud.
Someone pirates a movie?
...
Nobody cares. Not the fans of movies especially. They are happy that more people get to see a movie they like. Same with anime especially. Some buys blurays because they want to support some studios but they don't go fucking feral if you say you torrented some anime.

Gamers are biggest corpocucks on the planet and would fucking rim some fat hairy shareholder ass if given the "privilege" and some fucking title of a "true gamer and fan".

Given then umber of anons blatantly misinterpreting what is quite clearly written on the initiative leads me to believe one, possibly two things are currently happening;

1) A co-ordinated effort to discredit the initiative via bad actors and/or
2) A shocking number of anons are illiterate and are physically incapable pf parsing what is written. This is quite likely as the retardation gets notably worse during burger hours and burger literacy is very poor overall.

without regulation capitalists would still be allowed to give you a one year guarantee on their planned obsolence products. with regulations we the people have extended it to 2 years which benefits the consumer. the whole point of electing politicians is so they work to protect the vast majority without a voice against a handful of billionaires with far reaching bought voices. we don't want to become a capitalist dictatorship like america
