Fake fan. Metal Slug 1 is the only "real" game in the series, it actually focused on portraying a grim war setting with cartoon violence, and treated the subject matter more seriously. Which made its endings far more heartfelt and earned in their gravitas.

The series went off the deep end when it started doing goofy stuff with aliens rather than letting the cartoony presentation be a grim contrast to the themes of combat and war which is what made the level of violence present in the game so perfect.

im pretty sure that said that they were working on a brand new classic style Metal slug game years ago, it was in conference or something, they also announced Awakening there, and KoFXV was in development but i dont remember if it was revealed there too or before

Because making highly detailed foreground AND background pixel art is expensive as shit, and the genre is fucking dead. How many people besides you and me would be excited for an under 2 hour sidescrolling run & gun game? Might as well ask why people refuse to make new on rail-shooters. Because there's only like 20 nerds who would go hard for it, and the rest of the world has no interest.

Not saying it's impossible, specially for indies. I mean hey, people still occasionally make typing of the dead style games.But when I say "the genre is fucking dead" what I mean is: to publishers. It's not seen as a profitable market, so nobody wants to invest into a studio making one. In cases like that, you need a big huge surprise smash hit to wake the industry up and make copy cats.
Star Citizen kickstarted made infinite dollars, suddenly we got space games again Amnesia was huge? Suddenly horror games again. DayZ exploded? Suddenly open world zombie games everywhere, You need an indie to make a metal slug type game, become notch levels rich (but hopefully less racist) and that'll re-start metal slug style run & gun games. If that doesn't happen you're doomed to eat whatever scraps the indies throw you now and then forever.

If SNK really wanted to break out in popularity they'd tap the larger market (America) and bring back Metal Slug and Crystalis. The West doesn't give a damn about their fighting games.

Shit take. Realism is good and Metal Slug 1 is good but it's not all there is to it. The goofy stuff gave it a personality impossible to replicate and even provided for a damn interesting story in 3. Something very few games that don't use dialogues or long cutscenes can replicate nowadays.

They've already tried once and failed spectacularly at it. Games like Maximum Impact, Samurai Shodown Sen, Metal Slug 7 and KOF 11 had a big push on the USA but ultimately flopped hard.
