What are some contemporary "boomer shooters" that are actually fun?

The ones I've played, I can think of:

Nightmare Reaper
Project Warlock
Turbo Overkill
CULTIC
Project Warlock 2
Prodeus
(mostly) Boltgun

WRATH: Aeon of Ruin is okay but the levels are legitimately too big. It's way too easy to get lost in them and the difficulty can be all over the place as the levels change enemy placement and type depending on which ones you do first.

I'm playing through Selaco right now. the game looks awesome but honestly it's kind of boring. shooting doesn't feel that satisfying.
If I were to make a mod I'd just remove spread and recoil almost entirely and make it an Ion Fury 2: Selaco edition instead.

Certainly not Selaco which just plays like a really shitty and boring version of FEAR. Honestly any of these games that are made with a female protagonist tend to end up being pretty shit including Ion Fury with its stupid, lock-on magnum pistol and charged crossbow that invalidates any difficulty presented by a boss/tanky mob. Prodeus would be god-tier if it wasn't for the checkpoint system that the lazy nigger devs said they are changing years ago and then just guilt-trip you if you dare ask them about it. CULTIC is pretty good, but barely felt like a boomer shooter. Ranged weapons are too good and you can just blast heads before enemies can even fight back. This game is nothing like Blood(which is a good thing to me), but anons pretended it was for some reason. Dusk and Amid Evil are pretty solid, but very basic and shallow games. Hedon's level design was too autistic for me and I got burnt out super quick having to constantly navigate with the minimap.

>actually fun
REKKR might be the best one, but I hesitate to even count it because it's basically just a vanilla Doom mod and 3/4ths of it is free anyway.
Wrath Aeon of Ruin comes close, but that's really only by virtue of it having that Quake engine feel because its level design and weapon hit feedback are absolute dogshit most of the time.
Ion Fury is a Build Engine game with all the charm of a Build Engine game sucked out the window and replaced with excessive amounts of scenery objects. It's pretty though, and if all you want is something that feels like Duke, Shadow Warrior, or Blood in movement then it does that just fine.
Anything else isn't even worth trying, especially pretentious garbage like Selcaco.

Nightmare Reaper is fun for the first half but the second half is kind of a slog, mainly because the enemies it introduces in second half of the second act and third act are kind of shit. Like you've got spawners that spawn spawners that spawn spawners, you got those gay ass autoshotgunners, and those dudes that just instantly teleport behind you and lay lingering lightning turret ball things. Feels like as you progress there's less emphasis on staying mobile and avoiding enemies attacks and just more emphasis on trying to facetank everything and try to get enough health orbs to not die while tanking shit.
Also, granted that while they're optional, a lot of the later obstacle rooms in the levels are fucking kaizo tier bullshit.

I liked the second half of the game significantly more than the earlier sections that were far too claustrophobic for my liking. When it branched out to the city, the moon, and some arctic base and gave you a grappling hook to fly around is when the game got amazing. All that additional movement really helped make engagements better, having a double barrel that shot exploding flaming cannon balls that tanked my framerate was just a nice bonus. But I do agree, the game is almost 20 hours long if you just go through it once and skip most of the randomized extra shit or even NG+. Arguably if it had been brought down by 5 hours I think that would've been perfectly fine, most shooters don't have particularly long campaigns anyway.

Yeah that's one of the things I do have to give it credit for. The procedural generation drastically improves by the time you reach the city levels. You can definitely tell it was a learning process for the dev with the way levels start ramping up in terms of design complexity whereas in the early levels the procedural generation element feels incredibly basic and a lot of areas just feel like big rooms with the floor elevated randomly in grid like patterns

I think itโ€™s important to have an โ€œover the topโ€ main character like Duke or Caleb to sell the game. Main character is literally the entire cast so they gotta shine. Worked for Hedon cuz itโ€™s a gigantic female orc with a futa cock. Worked for citadel with half naked woman in love with her little brother. Doesnโ€™t matter what you do. Just make them โ€œover the topโ€

Disingenuous. There's a lot that still needs more work in Selaco but the AI is already fucking impressive at this point. Even the plasma dudes behave like they are playing quake with sidestrafing back and forth around corners. I can't name any game of the last decade with better AI trickery than Selaco. The world reactivity is equally stunning.

>HROT
Quake in Czechoslovakia. As in, literally Quake, with some wacky humor here and there. Very decent, and short enough not to overstay it's welcome
>WRATH: Aeon of Ruin
Underrated, but crippled by massive levels and the mind boggling decision to hand place every enemy on every diffuculty based on the order of beating levels
>Hedon
Couldn't get into it, too much reading and shooting didn't feel good, it felt as if I was shooting a cardboard cutouts. I don't know what Civvie was smoking with that one
>Boltgun
Same as Hedon when it comes to killing stuff, plus it's the boring nu-Doom style arena combat
>Cultic
Blood but not nearly as brutal. Great atmosphere, solid selection of weapons (including my favorite FG-42), fun time
>Ion Fury
Dook but modern. The level design takes a nosedive after halfway point, but it's still worth checking out if you're into Build games
>Amid Evil
Beautiful looking, fantastic sound design, best one on the list.
>Turbo Overkill, Nightmare Reaper
Nu-Doom pretending to be a boomer shooter, haven't played them

I just want more low-key boomer shooters. No Brutal Doom ripoffs, sliding, inside jokes, no Gianni, no metal/techno, no arenas

Hedon is good, but takes a little while to get its footing. It also doesn't hurt if you like RPG's and want some character interaction in your games. I wouldn't even say it had a lot of reading. Characters, towns, and so forth are few and far between.
I will agree that the sprites are kind of mediocre. They're doodled in some kind of paint program instead of modeled in 3D like Doom or Duke or Blood, and that just results in really non-dynamic poses and art. But it's not so bad that it's a dealbreaker.

If you want to include a cacodemon in a poster like it's some kind of in-universe mascot? Hey, that's cute. But I draw the line at Youtubers. Also, they're going to regret it when it comes to light sometime in the future that these people diddle kids or something.

depends on what you mean by full release
>1.0, main story is complete
Fraud comes out this year soon-ish, which means 9/10 of the layers are complete (think of it as chapters). Every "third layer" consists of only two levels so it should be faster in theory, specially since for the 8th layer they were taking longer to redo a ton of their foundation so its easier to work with, without changing how the game feels to play. Then knowing hackita it might be 6 more months waiting for the final superboss level to come out. Game is practically 90% done
>ALL content is completed
The guy just came up with a new level concept called "Encore", one for each chapter, of which theres ten. 2 of them are released and 8 will be added post 1.0. They are significantly more ambitious than the average level of the game so add one or two more years to that count

if its any consolation, the game already has more content than literally all of its competitors by a massive margin

Ion Fury is pretty as hell. But I do have gripes. For example... for how long the campaign is, there's not enough new enemies, and their introduction isn't spaced well. You'll spend huge swaths of the game fighting the same mooks.

Also, the basic enemies are kind of limited in that they don't do anything unpredictable. The many, many human grunts don't have special moves or advanced movement, they're just bowling pins to be knocked down. Like zombiemen from Doom instead of Lizard troopers or enforcers from duke.
This is solved a little bit in Aftershock though, where EDF troops dash about and such. It was a welcome addition.

I blame anime. Poisoned by unending fanservice, weebs ended up hating seeing men in vidya entirely.
Also it's just easier to sell stuff with a woman on the cover art. Maybe one day devs realize you can go with female villains for promotional artwork, like with Shodan or Elexis and still have you play as a guy.

Legitimate complaints, but I guess I got used to it over the years. What is there is pretty good and gibbing trash enemies to farm shards for tier 3 armour never gets old.
Aftershock is fantastic, but ending is even more disappointing than in original game. The dlc also felt much easier because ammo and explosives are everywhere now, something that was done better in original game.
The combination of refined build jankiness, really good tracker music and fantastic art is what gets me. It's too good man. Levels are great too, even the later half many people hate, I kinda like those metro tunnels. The sewer can go fuck itself though, even devs confirmed it was made to get more length out of the game

It's strange to me that they thought they had to milk Ion Fury's length. It already took me just under 40 hours to do everything in the base game and the expansion campaign, and I don't think I did much replaying.
Shooter campaigns are usually what, 8 to 10 hours?

I respect that you love the game though. There's definitely enough to love.

Heskel at the end of Aftershock glitches out super hard if you hit him with the right weapons. Damage boosted gas grenades do it if I remember right. If it works, he gets stuck in air and can't dodge or shoot unless you hit him hard enough to knock him back into reality.
Still loved the expansion and if they did another one I'd buy it. Getting lost exploring details in the maps is more fun than the gunplay and the gunplay's not bad. Except the fucking spiders.

I've been more obsessed with it recently. I played it once and liked it. Then I played the intermission and I LOVED it. And on replay I started realizing how perfect everything really was, and how everything contributes to the fun.

Like how dynamite is a bit more nuanced than Blood's... which can be a negative if you just want brainless impact grenades. But being able to do shit like unbundle the sticks to make a cluster bomb, or one-button toss it into the middle of a group and set it off with your gun, it feels so good when you do it right.

You should give it another shot. How far did you get? The crypt? That was the only time I can recall struggling with the layout (because I forget where to backtrack with the key for all the secret stuff is)

Hell yea man, these sort of collages are honestly one of the best ways to convince others to want to try a game based on strong visual impressions
I've been wanting to make some as well, but it's a lot of hassle to find just the right shots, so I appreciate the amount of work you put in these

I've been playing Selaco and I'm not really enjoying it at all. Everybody is praising it, and it does look pretty good, but I'm just not having fun.

There's a note outside the locked bridge (with the mine key inside) telling you about the captain's key. Go break the floor grate in the room with the TV and find it inside the lower decks of the spooky ship.

Are you struggling? I'm not throwing shade, it's a hard game. For me the joy is in split second engagements, finding advantageous angles to hold against ever enveloping squads while keeping your back covered and escape paths open. It's somewhat like counter strike with peeking and holding sightlines. Don't try to aggress too much, there are good times for it, but it comes with experience.

>headshotting enemies with the upgraded pistol and seeing their head fly into the stratosphere from a kilometer away
>throwing an axe at a shotgun cultist and killing him right before he fires
>clutch slo-mo moments
>clusterbombing like 10 dudes in survival
>the godlike flamethrower and molotovs
>second(?) level when that crazy shit happens in the sky and the combat music comes on
I guess it's not as insanely snappy and fast (though you can play it like that) like Dusk and Ultrakill are, but it's a hell of an experience.

Just made one for Trepang2's Jorvik Castle level if interested (well the first half only because I got bored)
There's a whole specops raid, training grounds, courtyard at sunset, burning basement and great ballroom segment, might make a part 2 for that.
And this is just 1 map.
Here's an ost to go along with it:

I love how New Blood makes the cover art for their games movie posters.
