They should have kept the original ending in Halo 2 where Arbiter finds a forerunner skeleton showing humans were forerunners, the entire covenant religion was a lie and they were killing the "gods" they worshipped.
Then Halo 3 concludes as normal, but no post credit scene to imply a sequel, this saves us from Halo 4 and 5 and concludes the trilogy on a high note. Oh and the guy who did advertising outside of the game with lore drops implying humans were not forerunner gets told to shut the fuck up.

Humans not being Forerunners really ruined the entire lore of Halo. Even back in CE Guilty Spark was clearly under the impression that Chief was a Forerunner, like when he was asking why his armor was so primitive compared to usual Forerunner armor. And then in 2 and 3 it is clear that only humans can ever activate and deactive the rings, which implies they are the race that built them. Even in the books as late as Contact Harvest it is implied that the Covenant started the war with humanity because the prophets were threatened by the fact that humans were uniquely identified by Forerunner tech as "reclaimers", unlike any other race in the entire galaxy, including the prohets.
