I think being able to choose between male and female avatars in every game would be more impactful.
There's a surprising number of players that get put off by the fact that a character's gender doesn't match their own, not realizing that they're not necessarily supposed to be an avatar for them but their own character instead.
The truly important thing is being able to identify and/or relate to whatever character you're controlling on some level, I think.
